In Mexico, 80% of the population identifies as Catholic. Their faith is marked in their identity and is transmitted in family values and cultural traditions. Each town has its patron saint to whom they throw a massive party.

The entire community comes together to celebrate the patron saint. My mom is from a town called Los Haro, Jerez, Zacatecas. This town's patron saint is Saint Raphael Arcangel. This week, the town had their patronal festival hat lasts about two weeks. Many towns have an interesting story of how the saint came to town and Los Haro's story is unique as well. Long ago, the treasurer of the ex-hacienda would lend the statue of Archangel

Saint Raphael to the community of Los Haro for the celebration of his feast. One day, that person did not want to lend Saint Raphael and they say that the statue appeared in Los Haro where they usually hosted his festivities and people saw small footprints along the path that were footprints of San Rafael. From then on, Saint Raphael stayed there and the people became devoted to him.

My grandfather Ricardo has been serving Saint Raphael in the Morisma for more than 60 years and offering reliquia to visitors from the surrounding communities. Reliquia is food. All year, my grandpa will fatten pigs and when it is the patronal saint's festival, he will slaughter the pigs and the women in my family will make a lot of food like tamales, asado de bodas, or some traditional dish from Zacatecas. They invite visitors from surroundings towns over and feed them. The Morisma runs Oct. 23, 24 and 25.

The Morisma of Los Haro is considered the only one in the entire municipality of Jerez and the second best represented at the state level. Friends from all over the state of Zacatecas participate in the morisma. The morisma consists of a theatrical representation classified within the dances of conquest in which, through parliaments and performances, a medieval-type fight is represented, in which there are kings and queens in their castles and armies with their war bands. Osman -the king of the Moors- and Charlemagne -the king of the Christians confront each other, who in different parliaments try to convince their opponent of the virtues of his religion;

Failing to achieve their objective, they enter into fights that are fueled by weapons and gunpowder-operated cannons in which numerous armies participate, dressed in colorful costumes, representing the Moors or the Christians; there are also colorful elements such as the cross formations by the Christians with torches; and those of the Moors, which are in the form of the moon and star. Everything culminates with the apprehension and beheading of the Moorish king whose head is shown to the public as a sign of the triumph of the Christian faith against the Mohammedan. Later, many men arrive on horseback with red jackets and perform an act where they form a cross.

Los Haro is a smaller community than West Liberty, but every year around this time, they host a big festival in honor of their patron saint Archangel Raphael. Every day there is a mariachi and tambora, there are fireworks, a parade, war bands, stands that sell food, toys, and other things, and fair games.The church is decorated with many flowers. There are visitors from various places. How can a ranchito, a small town have a big massive festival? Well, they throw a big festival because they haven't lost the cultural value of being in community. The whole town participates. Whether decorating the church, donating funds for the party, participating in the band, Morisma, or feeding outside visitors, this feast is full of joy and fellowship. I haven't been to the festival in years, but I hope I can go back one day to the land of faith and tradition.
