Cody Seiler, sophomore student at West Liberty embarks in a daily commute from Tipton with his sister Abigail to attend school in our district. The reason? The Dual Language program.
Seiler has been enrolled in a Spanish dual language program since he was in kindergarten in California. In 2020, the Seiler family relocated to Iowa to continue their volunteer work.
The Seiler family’s relocation to Iowa didn’t deter their commitment to bilingual education. Michael and Rachel, Cody’s parents, meticulously researched the best programs across the state.
Eventually, they settled on West Liberty, drawn by the fact that it was the longest dual-language program in the state.
Their decision was rooted in a profound belief in the benefits of bilingualism. Rachel recalls a conversation with a retired school administrator, who emphasized the cognitive advantages of a solid foundation in one’s first language.
For the Seilers, this philosophy rings true. They see bilingualism as a gateway to cultural understanding and limitless opportunities.
The Seiler family faced challenges finding housing in West Liberty, but that did not stop the family from enrolling their children to West Liberty.
As Rachel explains, “The challenges have been there, but the rewards have been so many more.” In spite of the commute, the Seiler family does not regret enrolling their children to West Liberty.
In their own words “We love the dual language program because it teaches our children expand their horizons. To think outside the English-speaking world. To look at other cultures and view the world as full of opportunities to live and travel wherever they want.
Most countries across the world teach the multiple languages in their school system. Being bilingual can foster a healthy brain also!”. They said they would not change their decision for one bit.
Cody’s experience in the Dual Language program has been transformative. While he recalls that in California there were more class in Spanish and more Latino teachers, he remains steadfast in his commitment to mastering the language, even here in West Liberty, Iowa.
His motivation stems from a deeply personal mission: to use Spanish in his family’s volunteer work and to share his faith with Spanish-speaking communities.
Adapting to a new language and culture hasn’t been without its challenges. Cody grapples with the intricacies of Spanish grammar and the fear of not being accepted by native speakers. Yet, his determination to bridge linguistic and cultural divides drives him forward.
As he honestly puts it, “You just have to do it. Don’t think you are stupid because you don’t know how to talk correctly, just commit yourself to doing and you will eventually do it very well.”
Despite the hurdles in learning a new language, this fifteen year old sees the value in learning about the Spanish speaking community and the language.
“Participating in the dual program has exposed me to a variety of cultures,” he says. “I have learned about many traditions and traditional foods- which I love. I love food so much”.
The sophomore added that learning a new language has helped him see things in another perspective, and also communicate with more people.
Cody delights in the chance to connect with the Spanish speaking community. Whether it is discussing about the rich culture or just conversing fluently in Spanish, it has always been delightful to communicate in many languages.
Whether they’re out running errands or immersed in Spanish-speaking settings, Cody and his sister grasp the language effortlessly, reveling in the joy of bilingualism and also knowing that they are indeed picking up on the language.
The Seiler family expresses gratitude to the West Liberty Community School District for embracing them warmly and fostering an environment where bilingualism is accepted and promoted.

Rachel recuerda una conversación con un administrador escolar jubilado, quien enfatizó las ventajas cognitivas de una base sólida en el primer idioma. Para los Seiler, esta filosofía suena cierta.

La familia Seiler enfrentó dificultades para encontrar vivienda en West Liberty, pero eso no impidió que la familia inscribiera a sus hijos en West Liberty.
Como explica Rachel: “Los desafíos han estado ahí, pero las recompensas han sido muchas más”. A pesar del viaje diario, la familia Seiler no se arrepiente de haber inscrito a sus hijos en West Liberty.
En sus propias palabras: “Nos encanta el programa bilingüe porque les enseña a nuestros hijos a ampliar sus horizontes. A pensar más allá del mundo de habla inglesa.”
“A mirar otras culturas y ver el mundo como lleno de oportunidades para vivir y viajar a donde quieran. La mayoría de los países del mundo enseñan múltiples idiomas en su sistema escolar. ¡Ser bilingüe también puede fomentar un cerebro sano!”. Dijeron que no cambiarían su decisión para nada.
La experiencia de Cody en el programa de Lenguaje Dual ha sido transformadora. Si bien recuerda que en California había más clases en español y más profesores latinos, se mantiene firme en su compromiso de dominar el idioma, incluso aquí en West Liberty, Iowa.
Su motivación surge de una misión profundamente personal: utilizar el español en el trabajo voluntario de su familia y compartir su fe con las comunidades de habla hispana.
La adaptación a un nuevo idioma y cultura no ha estado exenta de desafíos. Cody lidia con las complejidades de la gramática y el miedo a no ser aceptado por los hablantes nativos.
Sin embargo, su determinación de ampliar sus conocimientos lingüísticos y culturales lo impulsa hacia adelante.
Como él dice francamente: “Sólo tienes que hacerlo. No creas que eres estúpido porque no sabes hablar correctamente, simplemente comprométete a hacerlo y eventualmente lo harás muy bien”.
A pesar de los obstáculos para aprender un nuevo idioma, este joven de quince años ve el valor de aprender sobre la comunidad hispanohablante y el idioma. “Participar en el programa dual me ha expuesto a una variedad de culturas.
He aprendido sobre muchas tradiciones y comidas tradicionales, que me encantan. Amo muchísimo la comida”. El estudiante de segundo año agregó que aprender un nuevo idioma le ha ayudado a ver las cosas desde otra perspectiva y también a comunicarse con más personas.
A Cody le encanta la oportunidad de conectarse con la comunidad de habla hispana. Ya sea hablando sobre la rica cultura o simplemente conversando con fluidez en español, siempre ha sido un placer comunicarse en muchos idiomas.
Ya sea que estén en el mandado o inmersos en entornos de habla hispana, Cody y su hermana dominan el idioma sin esfuerzo, deleitándose con la alegría del bilingüismo y también sabiendo que realmente están aprendiendo el idioma.
