The West Liberty Comets boys’ soccer team continued their red-hot start to the season, rolling through their second week of play with two dominant shutout victories to remain undefeated.

On Monday (April 7), the Comets hosted the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and delivered a statement performance.

They built a commanding 5-0 lead by halftime and never let up, finishing with a 10-0 win.

Junior forward Uriel Andrade-Martinez was electric on the attack, scoring four goals, while freshman Iker Garcia Rosas added three more to fuel the offensive outburst.

Friday’s matchup against the Mount Vernon Mustangs followed a similar script.

West Liberty jumped ahead early with a 4-0 halftime lead and added two more in the second half to secure a 6-0 victory.

Garcia Rosas continued his standout freshman campaign with another hat trick, his second of the week.

With these two wins, the Comets maintain their undefeated record and have conceded just one goal on the season, outscoring their opponents by a positive 24-goal margin as they head into the heart of their schedule.

The Comets have a busy week with matchups at home against Cascade and on the road against Davenport West and Hillcrest Academy.

Girls continue search for first win

The West Liberty Comets girls’ soccer team continued their early-season stretch with a pair of challenging matchups in their second week of play, coming away with a draw and a loss.

The Comets opened the week on Monday with a home match against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks.

After falling behind 0-1 at halftime, West Liberty responded in the second half to level the match and secure a 1-1 draw.

The result marked the team’s second draw of the season and showcased their ability to respond under pressure.

On Friday, the Comets traveled to face the Mount Vernon Mustangs. Despite a competitive start, West Liberty found themselves down 5-1 by the final whistle, unable to keep pace with Mount Vernon’s attack.

With the week’s results, the Comets now hold a 0-3-2 record as they continue to search for their first win of the season.

After hosting Iowa City High on Wednesday, the Comets will not play again until traveling to Northeast on Monday, April 21.
