A COVID-19 outbreak among members of the West Liberty Comet football team has sidelined the Comets for the next two weeks, it was learned Tuesday through the West Liberty School District.

West Liberty Activities Director Adam Loria released a statement by the school Tuesday afternoon:

"Due to a positive COVID-19 case within the West Liberty football program, the varsity football games at Anamosa on Friday, October 2nd, and vs. Monticello on Friday, October 9th have been canceled. The program looks forward to getting everybody healthy and back together for a playoff run."

There was no word from the district whether the school's Homecoming was cancelled or postponed as well. It had been scheduled for the week of Oct. 5-9, with most activities taking place Friday, Oct. 9, at halftime of the game.
