The West Liberty volleyball team kicked off their postseason play last week with the RVC South tournament Monday in Wellman.

The Comets recorded a perfect record on the night and advanced to the RVC joint tournament falling to regular season champions Beckman Catholic in the finals.

After a 7-2 regular season conference mark, the Comets headed to the RVC South tournament with their eyes on a first-round matchup against West Branch.

The Comets took the first of the three sets, 21-14, before the Bears rallied in the second defeating the Comets 21-11.

The teams traded points in the decider before the Comets pulled ahead in the late stages, grabbing a 17-15 set for the match victory.

The second round saw the Comets paired against the host Golden Hawks.

The Comets snuck away with the first set, grabbing a 25-23 victory before a long second set. The two teams battled throughout the duration of the set before the Comets pulled ahead late to take a dramatic 30-28 victory.

The championship match saw the Comets square off against the Regals to decide the RVC South Tournament.

The Comets dominated the opening set, taking a 25-16 victory before falling 25-22 in the second. The third set saw the Comets pull out the third set with a 15-9 victory. With their tournament run, the Comets grabbed the first seed from the RVC South heading into the RVC Crossover Tournament.

The quarterfinal of the Crossover Tournament saw the Comets take on Bellevue. The Comets recorded a sweep, taking the sets 21-19 and 21-14 to advance to the semifinals against Monticello.

The Comets followed up their sweep with another, 25-19 and 25-23, to advance to the final against regular season champs Beckman Catholic.

The Blazers entered the match up on a 12-match winning streak and the No. 12 ranked team in Class 2A. The Comets were unable to overcome the Blazers and fell in two sets to grab second in the crossover tournament.

West Liberty played their first-round matchup against Grinnell Tuesday and if victorious will advance to play the winner of Anamosa and Camanche on Thursday at a site to be determined. Regardless, the start time will be 7 p.m.

A trip to the state tournament will llikely require a massive upset of No. 1 Mount Vernon, which sits at the top of this region. Their path is Williamsburg and then Benton or South Tama.
