The West Liberty softball team completed a busy final week of their season, winning three of four with conference wins over Wilton and Mid-Prairie before falling to City High to end the week.

On Monday, the Comets ended their season series against the Beavers. The first game was a back-and-forth affair as the Comets found themselves leading 2-0 after the third inning.

The Beavers immediately responded in the top of the fourth, pushing across a pair to tie the game and briefly grabbing the lead thanks to a run in the fifth.

Back-to-back one run showings from the Comets in the fifth and sixth saw the Comets escape game one with a 4-3 victory.

The second game saw a similar, but higher scoring, affair as the teams combined for five in the first inning with the Beavers leading 3-2.

Each side tallied runs in the second before the Comets drew even in the bottom of the third at four.

After trading runs in the fourth and fifth, the Comets found the deciding run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one and holding their visitors scoreless in the top of the 7th to grab a 7-6 victory.

On Wednesday, the Comets headed to Wellman to play the Golden Hawks.

The Comets grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first before Mid-Prairie flipped the lead, scoring four in the third. In response, the Comets added two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

Despite a valiant attempt, the Golden Hawks were limited to two in the bottom of the 7th and were unsuccessful in their comeback attempt.

The Comets ended their regular season against City High. After scoring first, the Comets allowed six straight runs in response.

Unable to mount the needed runs, the Comets saw the Little Hawks continue to add to their lead, eventually ending in a 12-4 loss.

The Comets kick off post season play Thursday at home against Anamosa. If victorious, the Comets will play again on Saturday against the winner of Solon and Vinton-Shellsburg.

In the opposite half of the bracket is fourth-ranked Mount Vernon, Union Community, Center Point-Urbana and Monticello.

For those looking ahead to the state tournament, this year's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union competition will once again take place at the Harlan & Hazel Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.

Class 3A will have its quarterfinal games split between the evening on Monday, July 22 and the morning of Tuesday, July 23.

Similarly, one 3A consolation will play on Tuesday while the other will take place on Wednesday, July 24.

Both semifinals will play on Wednesday while the championship and third-place games are slated for Friday.
