Like clockwork, the West Liberty girls’ wrestling team is taking home first-place medals.
Two more girls ended their tournaments on the top of the podium as the Comets continue to impress at events around the state.
This past weekend they did so at the Marion High School Girls Wrestling tournament with Aspen Sebolt (105) and Dionni Garcia-Vasquez (140) winning gold.
Sebolt collected three wins and three first-period pins. None of her matches lasted longer than 85 seconds with the championship match against Ashlyn Garcia of Cedar Rapids Jefferson taking the longest at 1:25.
Garcia-Vasquez needed four wins to claim her title and she did so with nearly as much efficiency as her teammate. She won four times via pin — twice within one minute and twice in the second period. Her championship win was against J-Hawk Josephine Budederi in 2:30.
Nearly getting that first-place finish too was Silvia Garcia-Vasquez. She recorded three pins en route to the championship match, all in the first-period, but likewise fell in the first-period of the 115 final against Reanah Utterback of Sigourney-Keota.
The same was said for Kiley Collins in the 125-pound bracket. She also recorded three pins to get into the first-place bout but could not get past Sammi Isham of East Buchanan in the final.
The final Comet to break into the top five on Saturday was Alissa Sanchez in the 110-pound bracket. She recorded two pins to get into the championship semifinals but fell in a 7-2 decision at that point. Sanchez lost in the third-place match by second-period pin.
Finishing in sixth place for West Liberty was Mercedes Brockert (130) and Angelique Bonilla (170).
Overall, the Comets took third place with 277.5 team points. Only Cedar Rapids Prairie (366) and Mount Vernon (327.5) were better.
This week, West Liberty will take to the mats in a co-ed triangular meet with Cascade and West Branch before participating in the Saber Girls Wrestling Invitational in DeWitt on Friday.
