Comets streak into substate play

Winners of five straight, West Liberty is full of confidence heading into substate quarterfinals

The West Liberty Baseball team started their post season play Saturday, matching up against Columbus Catholic in the first round.

Earlier, in the regular season finale on Monday, July 1, the Comets took a pair of games off of West Branch.

The Comets started post-season play taking a trip to Jesup to take on Columbus Catholic.

West Liberty managed to seize control of the contest early, pushing across a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

The Sailors managed a run in response the cut into the Comet lead.

Led by two RBIs from freshman Beckham Simon, the Comets added another pair of runs in the third before bats went silent for the remainder of the contest.

Junior Bryson Garcia led the way in the hits department with two of the Comets eight hits on the night.

The Comet pitching duo of junior Tytan Griffith and junior Caden Laughlin combined for six strikeouts allowing three hits and one earned run. 

Griffith threw six innings and 91 pitches and earned the win on the mound.

Earlier in the week on Monday, the Comets made quick work dispatching on West Beanch, 3-2 in the first game and 11-0 in the second to create great momentum entering the postseason.

The Comets matched up against Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday in Alburnett.

If the Comets pulled the upset over the 20-4 Cougars, they will return to action on the 13th for the district final against either Alburnett or Jesup.

A substate final would be played on July 16 against one of Anamosa, Winfield-Mt. Union, Mid-Prairie or Mediapolis.
