Comets claim forfeit to advance in Regionals following three losses

The West Liberty High School Boys basketball team fell in their final 3 games on the regular season against Mid-Prairie, Wilton and Iowa City Regina but advanced to the second round of district play after a forfeit by Regina Monday.

On Monday, Feb. 8, the Comets traveled to Wellman for their second matchup against the Golden Hawks. Mid-Prairie jumped ahead in the first quarter outscoring the Comets 17-6, before adding 19 more in the second to take a 36-10 lead into the locker room.

The Comets outscored the Golden Hawks 11-7 in the third quarter but Mid-Prairie added 16 more in the final period to cruise to the 59-25 victory.

Caleb Wulf led Comet scoring with 14 points along with six rebounds and a steal. Jayce McHugh and Ty Jones scored four points in the outing for West Liberty while McHugh adding four rebounds and a steal and Jones collected five steals. Chance Thrasher had two points and five rebounds. while Jahsiah Galvan had a single point to go with four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Comets visited Wilton. The host Beavers outscored the Comets 43-12 in the first half. The Comets found their footing in the second half and outscored the Beavers 15-6 in the final quarter but the first half deficit would prove too much as the Comets fell 62-38.

Hector Adames and Caleb Wulf both scored 10 points for the Comets. Wulf also had four rebounds and two assists on the evening. Ty Jones tallied five points along with a pair of rebounds, assists and steals for the Comets.

Jahsiah Galvan and Jayce McHugh both had four points while Galvan collected five rebounds and three assists to his credit while McHugh pulled in three rebounds and also had a block. Chance Thrasher had three points while Josh Perez-Echevarria hit two points to round out Comet Scoring

In their final regular season matchup Thursday, the Comets had their first opportunity to play the neighboring Iowa City Regina Regals in action before their post season matchup slated just a few days later.

The Regals outscored the Comets 19-2 in the opening quarter and built a 32-16 halftime lead. The Comets put up 26 points in the final period and ultimately fell by just 10, 58-48.

Adames led the Comets with 16 points, accompanied by seven rebounds, four steals and a block. Wulf recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds along with three assists.

Jones had nine points for the Comets with four rebounds and an assist. Galvan hit six points and has two rebounds while Jayce McHugh rounded out Comet scoring with three points.

Advance in District

Mondays first round district matchup against Iowa City Regina was cancelled due to COVID related issues within the Regal program, Regina giving up a forfeit.

The Comets advance to play Mid-Prairie on Thursday in Wellman for a chance to advance to the district final. West Liberty is 4-15 on the season going into the game.
