Comet volleyball team continues to stay unbeaten after four wins in Muscatine tourney

The West Liberty High School volleyball team continued their net dominance last week, sweeping all five teams they played, including being tournament champions on Saturday in Muscatine.

The Comets started their Three Rivers Conference slate for the season with a road trip to Tipton in a matchup of conference heavyweights from a season ago.

The defending conference champion Comets dominated, winning the opening set 25-5 before taking the second set, 25-15, and closing the match with a 25-15 finale.

Sophomore setter Brooklyn Buysse notched 32 assists to her total on the season for the Comets to help lead the attack while junior Macy Daufeldt lead the Comets with five kills and Monica Morales, a sophomore liberto, recorded eight digs.

Sophomores Rylee Goodale and McKenzie Akers both recorded 100 percent serving efficiency in the match to help the Comets to their opening conference win.

On Saturday, the Comets visited Muscatine to play in a five-team tournament against Williamsburg, Muscatine, Mediapolis and Burlington.

In their matchup against Williamsburg, the Comets wasted no time making their presence known. After winning the opening set 21-6, the Comets followed with a 21-14 win. Goodale lead the Comets from the service line, scoring on 13 of 14 attempts with four aces to her credit while Daufeldt mastered nine kills and Morales notched seven assists.

Next up on the docket was a match against hosting Muscatine. The Muskies would prove a tougher opponent although the Comets claimed the opening set 25-17.

The second set led to much of the same for the Comets, taking the victory 21-15 to win the match in two sets.

Senior Isabel Morrison starred for the Comets with a perfect 14 of 14 serving that included three aces. Daufeldt ripped another seven kills to her season total to help the cause while Buysse added 10 digs and 21 assists.

The third opponent of the day for the Comets was the Bulldogs from Mediapolis. The Comets dispatched the Bulldogs in similar fashion as the Muskies, winning the opening set, 21-13, and the second, 25-12.

Buysse was a threat in all facets of the match, going 12-14 with three aces on serves, providing 21 assists and recording a kill. Morales lead the Comets with eight digs and Daufeldt recorded 10 kills.

Finally, to close out the week for the Comets was their match against Burlington. The Comets again dominated the Bulldogs quickly in straight sets, 21-8 and 21-11.

Buysse would go 12 of 13 serving with two aces while adding 14 assists for West Liberty. Morales led with nine digs and Martha Pace mastered six kills to lead the team to the title.

The Comets improved to 9-0 on the season and will Celebrate Senior night Thursday at West Liberty High School against Mid-Prairie beginning at 5 p.m. before heading to Williamsburg Saturday for tournament action beginning at 9 a.m.
