Despite battling tough weather conditions, the West Liberty High School boys’ golf team placed third among eight teams Wednesday, April 6, in the Solon Invitational.

Coach Nick Frenz said he was “really impressed” with the way his team handled the cold, windy conditions while on the course. “There were times when the wind would physically move me and for my guys to perservere and post the scores they did, says a lot about them,” Frenz said.

The comets finished third with a 359 score, 40 shots higher than the hosts, who finshed with a 319 score while West Branch placed second with a 336 team posting. Tipton was just four strokes behind West Liberty at 360 while Williamsburg was fifth at 364, followed by Wilton at 85, Durant at 419 and Iowa City Regina at 438.

Again, junior Ty Jones had another top-10 finish for the Comets, posting a 42 an a 40 to mark an 82 on the 18 hole course, posting one birdie and seven pars while never having anything worse than a double-boggie.

Jones finished eighth individually and was just four strokes off the leader, Regina’s Mikey Takacs, who shot a 78, followed closely by 79s from Franke Haege Jr. of Solon, Brady Knoop of West Branch and Jack McCarty of Solon. Isaiah Zoske of Solon followed with an 81 while other top 10 finishers included Dylan Countryman and Will Bridges, a pair of West Branch golfers who finished at 83.

West Liberty’s team was completed by a 91 from Preston Daufeldt, who had a 44 on the back nine including a birdie and four pars while the team also had a 93 from Cael Daufeldt, hitting a 45 on the front nine and parring four holes, finishing with five parrs on the day.
