Comet girls sweep trio as Daufeldt breaks 1,000 mark

The West Liberty High School girls basketball team was dominant in their three victories this week, capturing wins over Durant, North Cedar and Camanche in Three Rivers Conference play.

Setting a new benchmark in Fridays matchup against North Cedar, West Liberty senior Macy Daufeldt crested the 1,000 career point mark enroute to a 33 point performance to lead her team to an easy win.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Comets hosted Durant. After outscoring their opponents 16-5 in the opening period, the Comets were held to just six points in the second quarter, but still taking a commanding 22-9 lead into the half.

The offense returned to form in the second quarter, scoring 13 points and holding their opponents to just three. A 14-point fourth quarter offensive show put an end to the contest with the Comets emerging victors by 29, 49-20. Durant fell to 4-10 on the season with the loss.

Freshman Pearson Hall led the Comets with 20 points as she hit 10 of 16 field goals in the outing while Daufeldt added 11, along with pulling down eight rebounds, blocking a pair of shots and nabbing two steals. Pearson Hall also had six rebounds in the game including four on the offensive boards and had eight steals in the game.

Sisters Finley and Sailor Hall added nine and six points respectively in the win. Comet scoring was capped by a three point effort from Brooklyn Buysse. Finley Hall also had seven rebounds in the game along with four steals.

On Friday, the Comets hosted the North Cedar Knights, a team that had won just one game this season and the state’s eighth ranked team didn’t take long to show their dominance. The Comets took control of the contest early, outscoring the Knights 28-6 in the opening quarter. They added 29 more points in the second as Daufeldt, a 6-0 center, blew by the 1,000 career point milestone, enroute to a 33-point performance that included hitting 15 of 20 field goals and canning half of her six free throws.

After leading 57-12 at the half, the Comets cruised to a 75-27 victory over the Knights, outscoring the visitors 18-15 in the half.

Along with Daufeldts’ 33, Finley Hall added 17 by hitting seven of nine shots and a pair of three pointerss in three tries while also connecting on a free throw. Sister Pearson added 14, hitting half of her 12 field goals and Sailor Hall added six points in the onslaught. Comet scoring was rounded out by Sophie Buysse who had three points and Sammi Goodale who had two.

On Saturday the Comets took the long journey to Camanche. The Comets outscored the storm 17-2 in the first quarter and took a 29-4 lead into the half. West Liberty cruised for the rest of the contest, capturing the 59-20 victory to end the week. No scoring totals were reported.

The Comets hit the road to play Tipton at the Tipton Middle School on Friday at 6:15 p.m. before the long bus ride Saturday to play against Northeast beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The team also play Tuesday. Feb. 1, against visiting West Branch with a 6:15 p.m. tipoff.
