The West Liberty High School girls’ soccer team scored a goal midway through the first half of their River Valley Conference game with hosting Wapello on Friday and hung on for a 1-0 victory, breaking a three-game losing streak.

Despite playing without six varsity players due to other school commitments, the Comets got the winning goal off the foot of sophomore Kylie Struck, kicking in a rebound off a defender.

Coach Manuel Machado said his team played well, praising the play of the midfield that included Aisha Murguia, Sheyla Madrigal and Finley Hall. “They did an awesome job,” he said.”Actualy, everyone played well.”

The coach also praised the play of goalie Crystal Ladezma for not allowing a goal, noting she made a number of great saves.

The Comets will be making up a couple of earlier scheduled games this week, playing Mid-Prairie on Tuesday, May 11, before hosting Anamosa on Thursay, May 14, beginning at 5 p.m. and Monticello on Thursday and then traveling to Clinton on Friday before coming back home to Memorial Field to battle neighboring rival West Branch on Saturday.

The girls are also scheduled to play May 21 against Vinton-Shellsburg with the varsity match scheduled to play at approximately 6:30 p.m. following a JV game.
