Comet girls drop two more outings

The West Liberty High School girls’ soccer team dropped both of their contests this past week, falling 1-0 to West Branch Monday, April 18, before getting shut out 10-0 to a talented visiting Solon on Thursday.

Against West Branch, the two teams proved to be evenly matched – the Bears, looking for their first win of the season and the Comets having won just once.

Defense was the story of the game, as both teams struggled to get fruitful offensive touches throughout the majority of the contest. The lone breakthrough came near the midpoint of the opening half as West Branch’s Emile Coleman found the back of the net for the lone goal.

The two defenses dug their heels in for the remainder of the contest as neither team found the net again.

On Thursday, the Comets got a visit from the Solon Spartans and the 11th ranked Spartans wasted no time offensively, striking early and often. The Comets found themselves trailing 3-0 early in the contest.

The high-powered Spartan attack was slowed by the Comet defense after their fast start, but two goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, including one as time expired, put the Comets in a 5-0 hole.

West Liberty fought mightily against the Spartan assault but were unable to turn the tides of battle, before ultimately falling 10-0. Morgan Link commanded the Spartans to victory with three goals. The lose was the fifth of the season in six games for the Comets.

Friday’s matchup against Columbus fell to inclement weather. The Comets return to the pitch Friday against Cedar Valley Christian at the Alburnet Sports Complex beginning at 5 p.m. and follow by playing Monday against visiting Clinton beginning at 5 p.m.
