Comet cross country team competes in major meet in Iowa City

Although short on numbers, the West Liberty High School cross country team proudly ran in the Bob Brown Cross Country Classic on Thursday, Sept. , held at the Kicker's soccer complex in Iowa City and hosted by Iowa City Regina.

Several Comets participated in the event, where runners were split into A and B units.

Ashton Burroughs finished 129th for the Comets in the meet that featured teams from all over East Central Iowa including Tipton, Iowa City Liberty, Mount Vernon-Lisbon, Solon, Monticello, Wilton, North Cedar and the hosts.

Burroughs finished his 5-K race in 23 minutes, 31 seconds.

While Liberty won the team competition for the boys by placing six runners in the top eight, Tipton's Caleb Shumaker won the event in 16:46.

West Liberty's Camden Latimer and Mason Benedict finished 162 & 163 respectively in 34:22 and 34:50.

In the girls competition, Lila Guerra finished at 105 for the Comets in 34:10 while Karla Velasco was 110th at 39:23.

Iowa City Liberty claimed the girls title, placing four runners in the top five including the winner, Allison Hein, clocked at 25:26 for the 5-K distance.
