DES MOINES — William Michael Velky, 58, of Cedar Rapids was recently charged with one count of Insurance Fraud — Application Submission (Class D Felony) following an investigation by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau.

The charge against Velky stems from an investigation which began in December of 2020. According to a criminal complaint filed by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau, Velky was involved in a two-car collision in Cedar Rapids in October of 2020, which resulted in property damage and bodily injury. After the collision, Velky obtained car insurance by telephone and asserted later to his insurer that the collision had occurred after the inception of the insurance policy.

On Dec. 22, 2020, Velky was charged in Linn County District Court and was ordered to appear at a later date.
