The West Liberty Comets continued their strong season this past week, picking up three straight wins to remain undefeated and hold firm at No. 2 in Iowa’s Class 1A rankings.

The week began with a commanding 4-0 victory over the Cascade Cougars.

The Comets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and controlled possession throughout, allowing their defense to keep the Cougars off the board entirely in a shutout performance.

On Tuesday, West Liberty faced a tough test against the Davenport West Falcons.

The Comets carried a narrow 2-1 lead into halftime and held steady in a tight second half to secure the win. The result marked their second consecutive one-goal victory over a 4A opponent this season.

The week wrapped up with a strong second-half surge against Hillcrest Academy.

After a scoreless first half, the Comets exploded for four goals in the second to notch their third shutout of the week.

In total, the Comets scored 10 goals this week.

Five were scored by Uriel Andrade-Martinez, four were scored by Iker Garcia-Rosas and one was scored by Javier Andrade-Martinez.

With another undefeated week behind them, the Comets improve their record and continue to build momentum heading into the second half of the season.

West Liberty appeared as the second-ranked team in the initial Class 1A rankings, only behind defending champion North Fayette Valley.

Iowa City Regina ranks third. The Regals and Comets will face off for the first time this season on May 2 at 5 p.m. in Iowa City.

Beckman Catholic is ranked tenth. The Comets and Trailblazers will square off for the first time on April 25 at 7 p.m. in West Liberty.

Girls fall to 3A foe

The West Liberty Comets took to the pitch Wednesday evening to face off against a strong 3A opponent in the Iowa City High Little Hawks.

Despite a determined defensive stand in the first half, the Comets ultimately fell 5-0.

West Liberty held their own early on, trailing just 2-0 at halftime thanks to solid goalkeeping and composed back-line play.

However, the Little Hawks found their rhythm after the break, capitalizing on second-half opportunities to extend their lead.

The Comets will look to bounce back as they play Beckman Catholic on the road Friday and Monticello at home the following Monday.
