The West Liberty High School boys’ golf team finished third for the second major meet in a row Tuesday, April 12, in a 10-team meet hosted by Mid-Prairie at the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk Invite at Kalona Golf Course.

Playing through difficult weather positions that included cold and wind, the Comets of coach Nick Frenz finished at 373 for their four players over the 18-hole course, with West Branch taking the title with a 323 showing followed by Washington, which was just one stroke ahead of West Liberty at 272.

Wilton finished fourth in the meet with a 379 while Mt. Vernon was nine strokes back at 388 and Iowa City Regina finished at 390. The hosts marked a 392 for the day while Durant finished eighth at 394. North Cedar followed with a 416 while Highland was the last place finisher with a 425 score.

Junior Ty Jones finished in a tie for sixth place in the medalist competition, marking an 85, while North Cedar’s Jaydon Nabb won the title with a 75. Three players shot 77 to finish in a tie for second including Regina’s Mikey Takacs, Washington’s Roman Roth and Brady Knoop of West Branch.

West Branch golfers also finished fifth and sixth in the meet as Will Bridges shot an 80 and Dylan Countryman marked in an 81. Jones tied Gage Gingerich of West Branch at 85 while Logan Highly finished at 87 for the Bears, as did Nolan Townsend of Wilton.

Coach Frenz said nobody on his Comet team was “extremely pleased” with how they played individually, but said, “I will take that as a sign that we play good complementary golf. We are off to an awesome start and are excited for a busy week next week with two duals and a tournament.”

After playing at Tipton and Durant on Monday and Tuesday, the golf team hosts Durant on Monday, April 25 for a 4 p.m. match at West Liberty Golf & Country Club before hosting a tourney beginning at noon on Tuesday, April 26.
