International muralist to visit West Liberty

Juan Chawuk (Juan Aguilar Santis), un artista maya internacionalmente aclamado vendrá a West Liberty del 30 de mayo al 5 de junio para pintar un mural en la oficina de Gentle Family Dentists. También realizará un taller de cerámica con el programa de West Liberty Youth Dream Catchers.

Juan nació en el sur de México en Las Margaritas, Chiapas y proviene de la cultura Tojolabal. Chawuk actualmente reside en San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, un Pueblo Mágico. El gobierno mexicano le otorgó el estatus de Pueblo Mágico por su valor cultural, histórico, arquitectónico y gastronómico.

Chawuk es conocido por tomar riesgos y no ajustarse a las tendencias actuales. Su arte está creado para seguir abriendo la conciencia y la inteligencia emocional de las personas. Este artista honra la naturaleza y las comunidades indígenas. A través de su trabajo, cree que las personas pueden conectarse con todos. Es muralista, fotógrafo, intérprete escénico, y escultor. Sus exposiciones han dejado huella en Europa, Estados Unidos y América Latina.

Chawuk ha participado en “The Stamp Project/Creating Cultural Currency” en Los Ángeles, California. Fue co-fundador y coordinador de las “Conexiones Chiapas-Chicago” para el Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano en Chicago, Illinois y también fundó la galería de arte y taller Van Gogh en Comitán, Chiapas. The internationally acclaimed Mayan artist Juan Chawuk (Juan Aguilar Santis) will be coming to West Liberty from May 30 to June 5 to paint a mural at the Gentle Family Dentist's office. He will also be doing a ceramics workshop with the West Liberty Youth Dream Catcher’s Program.

Juan was born in southern Mexico in Las Margaritas, Chiapas and comes from the Tojolabal culture. Chawuk currently resides in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, a Pueblo Magico. It was granted Magical Town status by the Mexican government for having cultural, historical, architectural, and gastronomic value.

Chawuk is known for taking risks and not conforming to the current trends. His art is created to tap into the consciousness and emotional intelligence of people.

This artist honors nature and the indigenous communities. Through his work, he believes people can connect everyone.

He is a muralist, photographer, performer, and sculptor. His exhibitions have left a mark in Europe, United States, and Latin America.

Chawuk has participated in “The Stamp Project/Creating Cultural Currency” in Los Angeles, California.

He was the Co-founder and coordinator of of the “Chiapas-Chicago Connections” for the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois, and also founded the Van Gogh art gallery and workshop in Comitán, Chiapas.
