Recently, Jetsamany Solis, a junior at West Liberty High School was selected to be a part of the 2023 cohort of USA students. The Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award is a $10,000 scholarship program for Iowa high school juniors. Herbert Hoover, an Iowa native and the 31st President of the United States, was a great humanitarian.

He gave a speech titled "On the Uncommon Man" to Wilmington College. This speech was what inspired the name to the Uncommon Student Award. In this speech, Hoover motivates people to be uncommon because the great advances in life were not created by mediocre people. They were created by uncommon leaders.

Students who apply to this program have to propose a project and accomplish it. Later, during the fall of their senior year, in late October, they are required to give a presentation at the Herbert Hoover Library and Museum. The program only selects 15 students to participate.

Applicants have to demonstrate that their project shows values that Herbert Hoover exemplified in his life of public service. Additionally, if they get selected for the 2023 Uncommon Student Class, they are required to be at the Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa for a whole weekend to learn more about the life and humanitarian work of Herbert Hoover. If students cannot attend that weekend at West Branch, then they cannot receive the award.

The unique thing about this program is that they do not look at attendance, grades, test scores, essays, or financial need. Students that are eligible to participate in this program are current Juniors in an Iowa high school or home school program.

More than one student can apply from any high school. Applicants have to submit a project proposal and two letters of recommendation.

After all presentations are given in October, each student receives a check for $1,500. A committee of distinguished Iowans listens to all presentations and chooses three students to receive an additional $10,000 scholarship to be used at an accredited two or four year college/university. The money is paid directly to the institution; $5,000 the freshman year and $5,000 the sophomore year.

Jetsamany decided to apply to this program with the idea to create a project focused on homelessness. Her project proposal consists in creating a resource guide for educators and folks in the community relating to people experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness is a difficult experience for people and there are people in our community that have experienced it. If you would like to support Jetsamany in her project, you can email me at vespinoza@wl.k12.ia.us and I will connect you with her.

Jetsamany would like to thank her teacher Mr. Simpson for writing her recommendation letter and her Spanish teacher for inspiring her to apply. She encourages next year's seniors to apply for the program. "You have to think about what you are passionate about and turn it into a project."

Jetsamany felt intimidated at first when she looked at the past projects from USA alumni. Projects varied from entrepreneurship, community/humanitarian service, conservation, and technology. There was a past student that started a museum while another provided meals to senior citizens. They all sounded so cool and Jetsamany felt like her project was not as big as others, but with the encouragement of her mentors, she decided to apply.

This experience taught her to believe in herself, reach out for help, and to not let opportunities pass her by.

Good luck Jetsamany on your project and once again, congratulations on this accomplishment!
