The West Liberty boys’ soccer team split their games last week, suffering a 1-0 upset loss at home by the hands of Tipton before rebounding on Friday with a 7-0 away victory over Maquoketa.

Against the Tigers at home on Monday, neither team was able to mount a goal in the opening half as the teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock.

It was Tipton that broke through for the lone goal of the contest, coming early in the second half.

Tipton’s Jayson Johnson found the ball near the net and buried it to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.

The score stayed there as the teams continued to work through the remainder of the second half with neither side able to find a goal as the road team spoiled the start to the Comets’ week.

However, West Liberty bounced back in dominant fashion on Friday against Maquoketa.

The Comets got to the goal early and often in the road trip, netting four in the opening half.

The onslaught continued in the second half, netting an additional three enroute to a 7-0 victory on the road.

Senior Bruce Songa and sophomore Uriel Andrade each posted a hat trick in the win with junior Javier Andrade netting the seventh goal.

The Comets will end their regular season against unbeaten and top-ranked West Branch at home, before entering a long layoff until the 20th for post-season play.

They will rest up and patiently await the winner of Prince of Peace and Bellevue as the top-seed in the substate five bracket.

Final minute heartbreaker

The West Liberty girls’ soccer team suffered a defeat in their lone matchup of the week, falling 3-2 to Tipton at home on Monday, April 29.

The Comets jumped ahead in the matchup early capturing a pair of goals in the opening 11 minutes of the matchup before both offenses went silent for the remainder of the first half.

The Tigers stormed back in the second half as Tipton senior Carly Langenberg dialed up a hat trick, with the decider coming in the 79th minute to push the Tigers over the edge 3-2 in the match.

The Comets will conclude their regular season on Friday with a matchup against West Branch before heading to Tipton to take on the Tigers once again in their quarterfinal regional matchup on May 15.
