On Monday, Jan. 15, the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons made the trip north to West Liberty to take on the Comets in a non-conference matchup.

West Liberty played well but would not be able to defeat the Falcons and lost 58-51

“It was nice tonight to have other people step up” expressed Coach Al Fear. “We need to do something to modify our game when they put a box and one on Macy. We need the girls to step up even more.”

The Comets jumped out to quick 6-2 lead to start the game.

Janey Gingerich had a layup and Haylee Lehman sank a jumper off the dribble, while Isabel Morrison made a shot in the lane.

Louisa Muscatine countered with a 7-0 run to put the score at 9-6 in favor of the visitors around the four minute mark in the quarter.

Gingerich had a steal and layup to cut the lead to one. The Falcons then made two straight three pointers to stretch the lead to 15-8 before Madison McIntosh would make a three pointer attempt late in the quarter to make the score 15-11 after the first frame with Louisa Muscatine in the lead.

It was a different story in quarter number two. West Liberty struggled to put points on the board.

The Comets were able to convert on about half of their attempts from the charity stripe, but would not have a made field goal until 3:01 left in the quarter on a rebound and basket by Lehman.

The girls made one more basket in the quarter on a Martha Pace baseline jumper, while the visitors stretched their lead to 34-22 at halftime.

The Comets came out of halftime with urgency and excitement. The Comets went on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 38-33 at the 5:00 mark.

Gingerich had a three pointer and layup, Lehman would convert a fast break opportunity and sink a couple free throws in the run.

The Falcons reeled off five straight to extend their lead to 10 before West Liberty would have a small run of six to pull to within a score of 45-38 at the end of the third quarter.

The Comets would continue to scrap and claw in the fourth quarter. The Falcons would again stretch their lead to 10 at 53-43 with 2:08 to go in the game.

West Liberty used baskets from Gingerich, Lehman, and McIntosh to cut the lead to two points with less than one minute to go in the game.

Unfortunately that was as close as the home team would get, a couple key missed shots and turnover allowed Louisa Muscatine to score five unanswered to finish off the Comets and win the game 58-51.

Haylee Lehman led West Liberty scorers with 16 points, Janey Gingerich put in 15, and Madison McIntosh added eight points.

Averi Goodale grabbed six rebounds to pace West Liberty on the boards, while Madison McIntosh added three for the Comets.

West Liberty traveled to Durant on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and lost 60-39. They hosted the eighth ranked Camanche Indians on Friday, Jan. 19, and lost 82-31.

The Comets drop to 2-14 on the season and host Iowa City Regina on Tuesday and travel to Cascade on Friday this week.
