The West Liberty boys’ basketball team hosted the Louisa Muscatine Falcons on Monday, Jan. 15. The visitors from the neighboring Southeast Iowa Conference came in and took one from the home team and won 56-38.

“I thought when we were only down six at half that we had a pretty good chance at a comeback. We let them go on a 9-0 run to start the second half and it was a 15 point lead, just like that,” said Coach James Laughlin.

“You can’t do that against senior ladened teams like that. They are going to capitalize and that’s what they did,” he said.

The boys are 2-12 this season, with both of their wins coming against Columbus Junction and Wilton in early January.

The Comets started there game little sluggish but were able to hang with the visiting Falcons early. With a little over the three minutes left in the quarter West Liberty was only down 7-4 after a made three pointer by Seth Feldman.

The teams traded baskets on the next two possessions and the score at the end of the first quarter had the Comets within one point at 11-10.

Seth Feldman started the second quarter with four straight points on made two free throws and a nice turnaround jumper in the lane to put the Comets up 14-13 with only two minutes gone in the frame.

Spencer Daufeldt took a nice pass from Feldman and converted it into points for a West Liberty fast break basket to make it 16-14 in favor of West Liberty. The Falcons inside game got going and put in four straight in for Louisa Muscatine to put them back in front 21-16.

The Comets would score twice more on an Austin McMichael floater and a Feldman shot in the lane, but West Liberty was down at halftime 26-20.

The third quarter was not kind to the hometown team as they started the half with no points on their first 11 possessions. West Liberty had five missed shots and six turnovers in that span.

Feldman drained a shot off of an inbounds play to score the Comets only basket of the quarter at the 1:04 mark. The deficit grew and Louisa Muscatine would lead 36-23 at the end of the third quarter.

West Liberty gained a little momentum early in the last quarter as they reeled off six straight points to cut the Falcon lead to 36-29 after a Tanner Iske steal and layup.

The Falcons then countered with six straight of their own to regain the 13 point advantage. That was as close as the Comets would be able to get as the teams went back and forth the rest of the game, West Liberty lost 56-38.

Seth Feldman led the Comet scoring attack with 20 points. Spencer Daufeldt and Tanner iske had six and five points each, respectively.

Feldman led them in rebounding as well with six and Brent Meyers grabbed five boards.

West Liberty went to Durant on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and lost a close game 51-48 to a 10-5 Wildcat team. They hosted Camanche on Friday, Jan. 19 and lost 78-45.

The Comets are now 2-12 on the year and host Iowa City Regina at home on Tuesday and travel to Cascade this Friday.
