Comet boys can’t tame Tigers

Last Friday, Jan. 12, the Comet boys’ basketball team hosted the Tipton Tigers looking to avenge their 66-45 loss earlier in the season.

However, the 9-4 Tigers proved to be too tough inside and West Liberty lost 77-44.

“They are a good basketball team, they are big inside. Hoffman is a pretty good player inside. We knew we were going to have to hit shots and we didn’t. I thought we took some really good shots and got some open looks and didn’t knock them down,” said Coach James Laughlin when asked about his team’s performance against Tipton.

Tipton drew first blood as they hit a three pointer from the top of the key, but West Liberty countered with a Brent Meyers steal and layup and a Feldman score off an assist from Meyers.

The Comets would be up 8-5 at the four minute mark after an Elias Rocha three pointer and a made free throw by Tanner Iske, Tipton would hit a corner three pointer as time dwindled in the quarter to put them up 10-8 at the end of the frame.

The Tigers started to take control of the game in the second quarter. Meyers had a basket inside to pull the Comets to within 12-10 with 6:19 to go.

Over the next three minutes West Liberty could only muster two points on made free throws by Spencer Daufeldt while Tipton scored 13 straight to push their lead to 27-12.

Gavin Chown and Iske would sink a couple shots from the charity stripe and Seth Feldman would score on a drive in the lane to put the score at halftime with Tipton leading 31-18.

The Tigers would continue their hot shooting as they knocked down two straight three pointers to start the third quarter.

The Comets first made field goal was with a little over two minutes gone when Iske drove the lane and scored to keep the score at 37-25 in favor of the visitors.

Tipton stretched their lead to 17 by the 3:05 mark on a made three pointer and strong inside play, coupled with a few Comet missed shots.

West Liberty would score four straight points towards the end of the quarter on a well designed inbounds play and a Feldman rebound and put back. Tipton had the advantage at the end of the third quarter 54-34.

West Liberty shooting woes continued to start the final quarter with three straight misses as the Tigers were able to hit consecutive three pointers to add to their lead.

Meyers hit two free throws with 6:31 to go to give the Comets their first points of the frame. The impressive outside shooting continued for the visitors as the deficit grew.

Feldman was able to get a basket to drop on a drive and Meyers grabbed a Comet miss and put it back for a couple scored in the quarter. West Liberty came up short and lost 77-44.

Brent Meyers led the Comets with 11 points. Tanner Iske netted nine points and Feldman and Daufeldt had eight and seven points respectively, for West Liberty.

The Comets fall to 2-9 on the season. They will host the Louisa Muscatine Falcons on Monday, Jan. 15, travel to Durant on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and host the Camanche Indians on Friday, Jan. 19.
