New season, new players, new positions

Wednesday, December 6, 2017
This past Friday, the West Liberty boys’ basketball team opened its season by hosting the Bellevue Comets from the RVC North division. The hometown Comets would come up short and they would go down 72-45.

“I thought we did some good things, but we also did some poor things and it showed. It was our first time out and we really didn’t know what we had. We have some new players in new spots,” said Coach Laughlin.

“We weren’t running our offense as we should be, we weren’t cutting and finding spots and we were settling for three’s a lot,” he added.

West Liberty looked a little sluggish to start the game with several missed shots and Bellevue was able to get out to a 10-2 lead.

Junior Spencer Daufeldt showed his inside presence and scored the Comets first five points of the game, but Bellevue would go on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and have the lead 17-5.

The second quarter played a different tune and West Liberty started to gain some momentum and work together as a team after a timeout taken by Coach James Laughlin early in the quarter.

They would go on a 8-0 run midway through the quarter with consecutive three point shots by Junior Seth Feldman and Sophomore Austin McMichael.

McMichael would also convert a fast break layup off a Feldman steal and assist. Bellevue then countered with a 9-4 run to bring the score at halftime to Bellevue 37 West Liberty 23.

After the half, both Comet teams would battle back and forth, but West Liberty would be able to outscore Bellevue 15-14 in the quarter.

The Comets were able to get the inside game going with Feldman coming up with two big rebounds and putbacks for scores.

Daufeldt also scored twice down low to help the Comets cause. After three quarters, Bellevue still had the lead at 51-38.

In the fourth quarter, a lid was placed on the basket for West Liberty. They were only able to muster 7 points with only 1 made field goal in the quarter.

With the Comets shooting woes, Bellevue was able to capitalize and outscore West Liberty down the stretch 13-5 and win the game.

Scoring leaders for the Comets were Seth Feldman with 16 on 6 of 22 shooting. Spencer Daufeldt scored 11 points, Austin McMichael tallied 5 and Tanner Iske came in with 4 points on the night.

Seth Feldman led the team with 7 rebounds and Spencer Daufeldt had 5 boards.

The boys hosted the Durant Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and will travel to Iowa City Regina this Friday, Dec. 8.
