Several members of the West Liberty Comets Volleyball team were recently selected to the River Valley All Conference team.

The River Valley Conference is made up of 13 teams from Eastern Iowa and formed into two divisions, the North and the South.

The North Division consists Camanche, North Cedar, NE Gooselake, Bellevue, Cascade, and Monticello, while the South Division is made up some of the original Eastern Iowa Conference members like West Liberty, Wilton, Durant, Iowa City Regina, Mid Prairie, West Branch and Tipton.

At season end, there were four state ranked teams from the RVC and two that advanced to State.

The Comets finished the season with a 22-14 combined record and a 5-6 mark in River Valley Conference, which was good for fourth place in the South Division.

They advanced to the second Regional play against Davenport Assumption but were not able to overtake the Knights to end their season.

The Comets have won 20 games or more in six of their last eight seasons and are coached by Ruben Galvan.

The Comets had two selections to the River Valley Elite team which is made up of 12 players from the conference regardless of division, Senior Brianna Morales and Junior Macy Akers.

Morales led the team with 261 kills, a kill efficiency of .438 and was 2nd on the team in blocks. Macy Akers led the team with 6.41 digs per set and 47 service aces. Her 6.41 digs were 2nd in Class 3A for the state.

West Liberty also had 2 girls selected to the River Valley South Division team. The team consisted of 12 players, Junior Hallie Mueller and Freshman Martha Pace.

Mueller was the third leading hitter for the Comets with 200 kills while also contributing 27 aces. Pace was West Liberty’s second leading hitter with 217 kills, had 26 aces and led the team in blocks with 45.

Senior Emma Martin was the Comets lone Honorable Mention selection. Martin played back row and was second on the team with 2.41 digs per set, contributed 36 aces and had a steller.948 service efficiency.

The Comets look to next season to improve on this year’s record.

They will be returning 2 or their top 3 hitters, in Hallie Mueller and Martha Pace, their defensive specialist Macy Akers and their setter Morgan Petersen. They look to keep the West Liberty Volleyball tradition alive and well.
