On Thursday, Nov. 9, the West Liberty Comet football program got together one last time to celebrate their most successful season in recent history.

The season included a 6-4 record, their first playoff appearance since 2013 and many team and individual records broken.

Broken records were the theme for the night. The season team records broken this year included Most Rushing Attempts (428), Most Rushing Yards (3165) and Most Total Yards (4280) in school history.

The Comets checked in at 2nd in all of Class 2A with their rushing totals and 6th best in 2A with total yards.

In addition, they set new standards for single games rushing yards and total yards against Camanche on Oct 20th with 592 and 602 yards, respectively.

It most cases when team records are broken, so are some individual ones.

Joe Kelly ran through the defenses to accumulate 1552 rushing yards this season, which tops the Comet Football record book and was good for 4th in the state at Class 2A.

Junior Seth Feldman completed 57.86 percent of his passes, which was the highest in school history.

On the defensive side of the ball, Junior Spencer Daufeldt harassed opposing backfields for a record 25 tackles for loss which was second in Class 2A District 5.

For individual games, Seth Feldman tossed six TD passes against NE Gooselake and in that same game Justice Dengler hauled in three of those passes, both of which were school records.

Finally, Joe Kelly amassed 345 yards against Camanche to set the single game mark for rushing yards, a record that should stand for quite some time.

Joe Kelly, not only owns the single game and single season rushing records, but he is also the Comet Career rushing yardage leader with 3095 yards. “It feels great to hold the record” states Kelly.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates blocking for me every play,” he said.

Kelly went on to talk about his goals to start the season, “My goal was to get as many yards as I could each time I touched the ball, and breaking the school record was part of that agenda.”

The Comets had several players get some post season accolades by earning all district honors.
