Volleyball wins first round

The West Liberty Comets won round one of regionals Wednesday, Oct. 18, in a tense, back-and-forth, game against the Solon Spartans.

It was the first elimination game of the post season for the Comets, who earned the right to travel to Davenport Assumption for game two on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The Comets dominated the Spartans the first set 25-15, but dropped the next two 23-25 and 25-27. They had to battle from behind to take the next two 25-23 and 15-10 in the best of five situations.

Senior Emma Martin lead the way with 25 successful serves and four aces. Macy Akers went 20 for 23 in serves with two aces while Morgan Peterson pulled off a perfect 24 of 24 serves.

Meanwhile Brianna scored 18 kills while Martha Pace and Hallie Mueller had 14 kills each. They were aided by 7 kills from Averi Goodale and Breana Thurness.

But make no mistake, the win didn’t come easily for the Comets. Though they seemingly cruised through the first set, the following four were anything but easy.

Solon defense was there to return just about every the Comets could throw at them, both sides traded blow for blow the rest of the match.

The struggle started in the second set. By the first timeout the Comets were down 2-7. Morales pulled off a monster kill, but the gap only widened to 12-22.

The Comets managed to go on an amazing nine point run behind the serves of Morgan Peterson. Just when it looked like they could take it all back they suffered a kill. The Comets ended up losing set two 23-25.

Set three was a hard fought battle that could have gong either way up until the very end. Neither side managed to pull away from the other.

Unfortunately for the Comets, the Spartans took the lead 26-25 with a kill, then finished the deal 27-25 when West Liberty hit the ball out of bounds.

Behind 1-2 for the game, the Comets found themselves on the edge of not only losing the game in the next set, but being eliminated from the post season early.

They just couldn’t manage to find a break either in Solon defense in the fourth set, trailing the set from behind one or two points at a time.

However, the Comets managed to get their first real lead of Set 4 at 23-22, just in time. Ultimately, a kill by freshman Martha Pace gave the Comets the win 25-23.

All of the sudden both teams found themselves in a set five winner-take-all situation. The first to 15 would go on, while the losers would go home.

A kill by West Liberty Senior Breana Thurness put West Liberty on the board first 1-0. But, Solon battled back and took the lead 5-7.

A critical ace by Emma Martin would give West Liberty the lead 12-10. With that the Comets wouldn’t let go. Ultimately, Solon succumbed to the pressure and West Liberty won the set 15-10.

The best of five game went to West Liberty, who now moves on. Better than last year, when Comets were knocked out in round one by Davenport Assumption 2016.

In fact, they went to do battle with Davenport Assumption once again on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
