Train hits Lone Tree driver in West Liberty

On Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at around 12:53 p.m., West Liberty Police responded to a car versus an Iowa Interstate train crash in the 200 block of North Calhoun St.

The accident involved a blue Chevy, which was pushed along by the train approximately two city blocks coming to rest on the north side of Prairie Street.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was 44 year-old Chanel Charles from Lone Tree, Iowa. He was extricated by West Liberty Fire and Ambulance using the JAWS of life.

Charles was flown by an AirCare 1 helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals in critical condition, were he is still being treated.

The West Liberty Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Muscatine County Sheriffs Office, the West Liberty Fire and Ambulance Department and the Iowa State Patrol.

The incident remains under investigation. The crash did occur at an intersection with working flashing red crossing lights.
