West Liberty downs Durant-Bennett

The West Liberty (19-11) volleyball team, hungry for a win after losing their last three non-tournament River Valley Conference matches, took Durant-Bennett five sets at West Liberty on senior night Oct. 5, beating the Wildcats 3-2. Scores were 25-20, 25-15, 17-25, 24-26, and 15-12.

"It was a good start," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. "We had a bad moment in the third and the fourth game. You've got to give credit to our kids for hanging in there. I think it was an important game for us going into tournament play. We fought and kept fighting.”

Set 1

The Comets fell behind early in the first set but fought back to win. Durant started with the serve and scored the first two points on aces. A Durant kill, a West Liberty hitting error, another Durant point, made it 4-0, Wildcats.

A kill by Brianna Thurness was the Comets' first point. Durant scored a point at the net, then the Comets had a hitting error for a 7-1 Durant lead.

The Wildcats had a serving error, hit the ball into the net, then B. Morales got another kill for a 7-4 score. Durant was called for a double hit, then Macy Akers had a terrific dig allowing B. Morales to get another kill. Each team had a hitting error for an 8-7 Durant lead.

The teams traded points to an 11-9 score, then Martha Pace got a kill for the Comets. Durant scored two points, then B. Morales got a kill.

A Durant kill and an error by each team made it 15-13, Wildcats. B. Morales got a kill, then Durant had a net violation. An ace on the line by Maya Morales tied the set at 15-15.

The teams traded points again, then a kill by Madison McIntosh added to the Comets' lead. Durant hit the ball out of bounds and, trailing 19-16, the Wildcats called a time out. A point by each team and a kill by Martha Pace made it 22-18, Comets. Durant scored two points, then the Comets, seeing their lead cut to two, took a time out.

A hit by B. Morales rolled along the net before dropping for a West Liberty point. The score was 20-23. A Durant error and a Durant violation made it 25-20, West Liberty for the first set.

Set 2

The Comets won the second set by 10 points. The first three points went to the Comets, who did not trail in the set. Durant got a kill for a 3-1 score. A Wildcat block try went out of bounds. Two hitting errors by Durant made the score 6-1, and Durant took a time out.

A B. Morales kill hit the line for a West Liberty point. The Comets had a serving error then hit the ball out of bounds. Another hit out of bounds by the Comets and a net violation on West Liberty made it 7-5, West Liberty.

A Durant serving error, a Wildcat hit in the net, and a Durant point at the net made it 9-6, Comets. Durant had a net violation, the Comets had a serving error, then each team scored a point.

Durant made three errors for a 14-8 West Liberty lead. West Liberty scored the next three points to take a 16-8 lead. West Liberty scored two points, then each team scored a point.

Another West Liberty point made it 20-10. Durant hit the ball too far, but the Comets tipped it. B. Morales got a kill. Durant scored two points, then hit the ball out of bounds for a 22-13 West Liberty lead.

The Wildcats scored a point, then Thurness got a kill for a 23-14 score. Durant made an error. A kill by Martha Pace was the set point. West Liberty took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3

Durant won the third set by eight points. The Wildcats scored the first three points on a block and a couple West Liberty miscues. Each team scored a point, then the Comets hit the ball out of bounds.

Durant tipped the ball for a West Liberty point. A West Liberty point and a hitting error by the Wildcats tied the set at 5-5. A serving error on the Comets and a hit into the net by Durant tied the score at 6-6. The teams traded points to an 8-8 score.

Durant hit the ball in the net then scored the next three points for a 13-9 score. The Comets scored two points, then Durant scored a point. An under-the-net call on the Wildcats made it 14-12, Durant.

Durant scored three consecutive points then had a net serve for a 17-13 score. Durant scored the next three points on a kill, a West Liberty hitting error, and a block.

West Liberty scored a point, then a serving error on the Comets made it 21-14. Durant got a kill then had a hitting error. Another Durant point was followed by a net serve by the Wildcats.

A kill by Durant, a Durant hit that hit the antennae, and another Durant point made the final score of the set 25-17. West Liberty had a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set 4

With a 26-24 win in the fourth set, Durant tied the match at 2-2. A West Liberty carry gave Durant their first point. A Durant error tied the set at 1-1. Durant hit the ball out of bounds, then Thurness got a kill. The Comets scored the next five points for a 7-1 score.

The teams traded points, then a serving error on the Wildcats made the score 9-3, Comets. Durant hit the ball out then scored the next two points. A West Liberty kill and an ace by Martha Pace made it 5-12, Comets.

The teams traded points, then Morgan Peterson scored with a block for a 16-8 West Liberty lead. A net violation on the Comets made the score 16-9. The Comets scored two points, then Durant scored six consecutive points for an 18-15 score.

Durant scored again, and the Comets took a time out, leading 19-15. Durant scored four points to tie the set at 19-19. Pace got a kill, and Karsyn Ruess served an ace for a 21-19 West Liberty lead.

Durant scored two to tie the set at 21-21. A Durant serving error made the score 22-21, Comets. B. Morales got a kill. Trailing 23-21, Durant took a time out. Durant scored a point then had a serving error for a 24-22 West Liberty lead.

The Wildcats tied the set at 24-24 then scored the next two points to take a 26-24 win in set four and to tie the match at two sets each.

Set 5

The fifth set, a tie-breaker, was played to 15 points. The Comets won. Durant scored the first two points, then West Liberty tied the score.

A point by the Wildcats and a kill by B. Morales made it 3-3. Thurness got a kill, the Comets scored with a block, then B. Morales got a kill for a 6-3 score.

Durant took a time out. Thurness got a kill, then a Durant hit was tipped by the Comets for a 7-4 tally. B. Morales got a kill, then Durant hit the ball out of bounds.

Pace scored a point at the net, then a West Liberty serving error made the score 10-5, Comets. Each team made an error, then West Liberty scored three consecutive points on a placement by Pace, a hitting error by Durant, and a Durant miscue. The Comets had a 14-6 lead.

Durant didn't let up and scored the next six points for a 14-12 score. The Comets took a time out. Pace scored the winning point of the block for a 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match win.

"It was a battle," Durant Head Coach Renee Meyer said. "We, unfortunately, came up on the short end again - another five-set match that we lose."
