Wilton rings up WL

The West Liberty volleyball team lost their second match of the season on the road at Class 2A eighth-ranked Wilton. They won one set and lost three. Scores were 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, and 19-25.

“We were on a roller coaster,” West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. “We couldn’t keep any momentum. We didn’t play our best, and hopefully we learn from that. We played well at times, but not enough times. It was a learning experience for us, and hopefully we’ll become a better team.”

Set 1

A kill attempt hit out of bounds by the Beavers gave West Liberty the first point of the first match. Wilton got a kill to even the score at 1-1.

Wilton failed to return the ball then got a block for a 2-2 score. Wilton had a serving error, then the Comets failed to return the ball for a 3-3 tally.

A Wilton ace and a back row kill by Martha Pace made it 4-4. Hallie Mueller served an ace, and the Beavers scored a point at the net. A Wilton error and a point at the net brought the score to 6-6.

Wilton got a kill from the back row then a Wilton block attempt went out of bounds, and the score was tied at 7-7.

The Comets had a hitting error, then Pace got a kill. Macy Akers served an ace, Mueller got a kill, and the Comets had a two-point lead at 10-8.

Wilton got a kill, Mueller got a kill, and the Comets did not return the ball. Brianna Morales got a kill, then Pace served an ace for a 13-10 West Liberty lead. B. Morales scored a point at the net and, trailing 14-10, the Beavers took a time out.

Wilton got a kill then had a serving error. The Beavers got a kill then had a net violation. Wilton failed to return the ball, then the Comets returned the favor.

Wilton hit the ball into the net then scored a point with a block for an 18-14 lead. The Comets failed to return the ball for an 18-15 score. Wilton got a kill, then Wilton had a net violation for a 19-16 score.

Wilton got a kill, then the Comets had a block try that went out of bounds for a 19-18 score. Wilton had a serving error, and West Liberty had a serving error as well.

West Liberty hit the ball too far for a 20-20 tie. Mueller got a kill, the Comets had a serving error for a 21-21 score. then B. Morales got a kill and, Wilton, trailing 22-21 took a time out.

The Comets had a net serve for a 22-22 score. Wilton failed to return a serve. Trailing 23-22, West Liberty took a time out.

The Comets didn’t return the ball, and Wilton was one point from a first set win. The Comets took another time out. The final point of the set came on a West Liberty block that went out of bounds for a 25-22 set one loss for the Comets.

Set 2

West Liberty won the second set to make it a 1-1 tie for the match. Wilton scored the first point with a kill. Wilton had an error to even the score.

Wilton got a kill, then West Liberty had a hitting error for a 1-4 Wilton lead. Mueller got a kill, and Pace served back-to-back aces for a 4-4 tie.

A West Liberty block attempt went out of bounds, West Liberty hit the ball out of bounds for a 6-5 Wilton lead.

The Comets were called for a carry. B. Morales got a kill, then a kill by Pace 8-8. Thurness got a kill, then a Wilton kill tied the set at 9-9.

Pace got a kill, then Wilton got a two kills to take an 11-10 lead. West Liberty scored a point at the net.

The Beavers tied the score when the Comets failed to return the ball. A West Liberty hit out of bounds gave Wilton a 13-12 lead. Maya Morales hit the ball over from the back row for a 13-13 tie.

Each team had an error for a 14-14 tie. The Comets had serving error, then the Beavers had a serving error.

The Beavers failed to return the ball, then Morgan Peterson served an ace. An error by West Liberty made it 17-16, Comets.

B. Morales had a kill, then a hitting error on the Beavers and an ace by Maya Morales put the Comets up 19-16. Wilton took a time out. An error by Wilton, and a kill by Wilton made it 20-17.

Behind the serving of Macy Akers it was all Comets, with kills from Breana Thurness and Pace, a no return and a hit into the net by Wilton ended the set at 25-17, and the match was tied at 1-1.

Set 3

Too many errors in the third set kept the Beavers on top. A net violation on the Comets gave the Beavers the first point of the set. Wilton hit the ball too far to tie the set at 1-1.

Each team made an error. A block try by Wilton went out of bounds, Wilton got a kill, then wilton got a block. Pace got a kill for a 4-4 score.

Wilton hit the ball too far, then the Comets were called for a net violation. Wilton had a serving error, then the Comets failed to return the ball for a 6-6 score.

Wilton got a kill, then B. Morales got a kill. Wilton placed the ball for a point, then the Comets hit the ball into the net for a 9-7 Beavers lead.

Wilton got a kill, then West Liberty didn’t return the ball. The score was 11-7.

The Beavers had a block try go out of bounds, then the Comets had a net serve.

Madison McIntosh got a kill. Wilton had a net violation then a kill. Pace got a kill, the Emma Martin served an ace.

An error by the Comets made it 14-12. Wilton scored with a block, then the Comets didn’t return the ball. Wilton got a kill then had a serving error for a 17-13 Wilton lead.

Wilton was called for four hits, Mueller got a kill, then the Comets hit the ball out of bounds. A four hits call by the Comets made it 19-15.

B. Morales got a kill, then the Comets didn’t return the ball. Macintosh got a kill for the Comets.

A West Liberty block try went out of bounds, then B. Morales got a kill for a 21-18 Wilton lead. M. Morales served an ace, and the Comets were within two points.

The Beavers took a time out. B. Morales got another kill, and the score was 21-20, Beavers.

A serving error, a point at the net by Wilton, a tip over by the Beavers, and a block by Wilton ended the set at 25-20. Wilton took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set 4

The fourth set was tied nine times, the last time being 19-19, before Wilton pulled ahead to take the set and the match.

Wilton didn’t return the Comets’ first serve to start the set. Pace got a kill, then a Wilton hit out of bounds and an antennae violation by the Beavers made it 4-0, West Liberty.

Wilton scored the next four points to tie the set at 4-4. Thurness got a kill, then Wilton scored. Pace got a kill, then the Comets hit the ball into the net.

The Comets were called for four hits, then Wilton had a carry for a 7-7 tie. Wilton hit the ball out of bounds, then McIntosh got a kill.

An ace by Mueller and a block by B. Morales for an 11-7 West Liberty lead. The Beavers took a time out.

The Comets had a serving error, then the Comets hit the ball out of bounds. B. Morales got a kill, then Wilton got a kill.

The Comets hit the ball in the net. Wilton got a kill for a 12-12 tie. Wilton got another kill, then failed to return the ball for a 13-13 tie.

M. Morales served an ace, then the Comets hit the ball out of bounds fora 14-14 tie. Wilton scored at the net then had a net violation. Wilton hit the ball into the net, then Pace got a kill to make it 17-15.

Wilton hit the ball out of bounds, West liberty had a hitting error, then a carry by the Comets made it 18-17, West Liberty.

The Comets hit the ball out of bounds for an 18-18 tie. Wilton got a kill, then the Beavers had a serving error for a 19-19 tie. Wilton finished the set with a six-nothing run for the set and match win.

“It was a very good match,” Wilton head coach Brenda Grunder said. “We worked really hard last week on blocking. We slowed a lot of their swings down. West Liberty shows tremendous hustle. No ball is down for them. That motivated us as well to be scrappy.”

West Liberty 3, Cascade 0 Sept. 7 at West Liberty

The Comets defeated Cascade in three sets. Scores were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-23. Macy Akers led in digs with 24. Brianna Morales hed 11 kills. Martha Pace had four aces. Akers, Emma Martin, Maya Morales, and Karsyn Ruess were perfect serving. Morgan Peterson had 29 assists.
