A message from the Fire Chief (8/31/17)

Fire Chief Kirt Sickels · Wednesday, August 30, 2017
Hello West Liberty and surrounding communities! I write to you this week to let you know about a couple of exciting things going on at the West Liberty Fire Department!

First off, we have been lucky enough to get permission from the IAIS, (the railroad), to do another “Train Ride”! We will again be partnering with Durant Fire Department to do a joint fundraiser for the departments. Our last train ride, (which was back in 2012), was a huge success because of the community support and we hope that it again will be successful so we can use those funds to help us equip a new ambulance!

The “Train Ride” fund- raiser will be September 30, 2017 and there will be four trips throughout the day! We will be riding in some vintage old time passenger cars complete with a view! We will have a total of 180 seats per trip.

Trip #1 will leave West Liberty at 8:15 a.m. and arrive in Durant at 8:50 a.m..They will leave Durant at 9:25 a.m. and return to West Liberty at 10:00 a.m..

Trip#2 will leave West Liberty at 10:35 a.m. and arrive at Durant at 11:10 a.m.. They will leave Durant at 11:45 a.m. and return to West Liberty at 12:20 PM.

Trip #3 will leave at 12:55 PM and arrive at Durant at 1:30 PM. They will leave Durant at 2:05 PM and return to West Liberty at 2:40 PM.

Trip #4 will leave West Liberty at 3:15 PM and arrive at Durant at 3:50 PM. They will leave Durant at 4:25 and return to West Liberty at 5:00 PM.

Tickets can be purchased at Fred’s Feed, US Body Works, Ron Alpen Ford, and at West Liberty and Midwest One banks. Tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for children. There will be food and other fun activities at both West Liberty and Durant throughout the day. Tickets sales are going well so hurry and get them purchased so you can secure a spot on the train at the time that works best for you.

Please join us for a day of fun, fellowship and an incredible train ride!

I would also like to highlight three very dedicated firemen on our department, which in fact is their real jobs--they are fireman! We are very fortunate to have these three guys on our department as they are huge assets for us and this community! They are Robbie Rock, Brett Becker and Jon Weiland! All three of these guys are on the Muscatine Fire Department and play very important roles there keeping that community safe as well!

Robbie Rock is a long time member of the department, a paramedic, former Chief and has held about every officer position on the department. He comes from a long line of Rock’s that have been very dedicated this community and to this fire department. Lately Robbie has tried his hand at a little bit of politics, as he is serving us also as one of our City Council Members.

Brett Becker is another that is serving in many ways! For the department, he serves as our Medical Officer and assists with our EMS training. He is also serving in the Army National Guard and through his leadership qualities keeps his fellow soldiers safe and well trained. He has also been deployed into harm’s way and has served his country with distinction. He is also a Critical Care paramedic and again, a wonderful asset to this community.

Last but least, is Jon Wieland who himself is a paramedic and plays a very important role in this department as one of our Training Officers. His knowledge of what needs to be done in the rear of an ambulance or in five alarm fire is unmeasurable! He is always offering his expertise and experience to everyone in the department.

Without a doubt this department draws and puts in to motion valuable information and training from these three gentleman. Their dedication and professionalism is commendable and should be recognized by all!

I thank you three gentleman, the department thanks you and we are a better department because of you! Thanks Robbie, Brett and Jon!
