The West Liberty volleyball team won all five matches at the Grinnell tourney Aug. 26, winning the championship, starting off with a perfect season.

In pool play, the Comets defeated East Marshall in two sets, 21-11, 21-15, Des Moines Christian in two sets, 21-8, 21-10; and Dallas Center Grimes in three sets 21-15, 20-22, 15-5.

"We had some ups and downs, but for the most part, we stayed focused and disciplined," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said.

"We had some mental errors that we need to eliminate,” he said. “I was pretty proud of the kids. They hung in there. (In the final match) we were trying to keep them off-balance, and (Macy Akers) was hitting the targets.”

The Comets now sit at five wins. Over the tourney Macy Akers, junior. had 79 digs and had 50 of 54 successful serves, including 12 aces. Brianna Morales, senior, made 19 kills in front of the net and pulled off four blocks.

“I don't know that you could tell that (the freshmen) were freshman,” said Coach Galvan. “They came in here, and they played their game, and that really helped us. We don't have just one good hitter, we have several, Morgan (Peterson, the setter) did a nice job using everybody."
