WL softball’s success

The West Liberty Comets softball team gathered at the high school July 13 to distribute awards and recognize accomplishments.

The 2017 Comets softball team finished third in the River Valley Conference South with a 22-14 record.

They advanced to the Regional Final game for the first time in recent memory. The two teams in the RVC South that finished ahead of the Comets both advanced to the state tournament.

Participation awards were given to those not quite qualifying for a varsity letter.

Varsity letters were distributed. Haddie Anderson, the team's only senior, received her fourth varsity letter.

She had a .371 batting average and led the team with 39 RBIs.

Breana Thurness, Brooklyn Harned, Brittney Harned, Emma Martin, Haylee Lehman, Parker Werling, Janey Gingerich, Macy Akers, Skylar Wendt, and Austyn Crees received varsity letters.

Academic All-Conference winners were announced. Qualifications were a .350 or higher grade point average and a varsity letter winning in 9-12 grade.

Comets qualifying for the honor were Thurness, Anderson, Brooklyn Harned, Lehman, Martin, Werling, Crees, and Bella Runge.

"Academics is what it's all about," Coach Dave Reynolds said.

Other all-conference awards were given. All-Conference South winners were Lehman (infield), Anderson (infield), Crees (catcher), and Thurness (honorable mention). Akers was a member of the All-League team (infield).

Team awards that were voted on by team members were Most Improved: Alex Torres, Heart: Crees; Inspiration and Golden Glove: Anderson.

Reynolds thanked several including Brenda and Steve Thurness, Paul and Becky Martin, Kelly Morrison, David John Morrison, Brandon Harned, Peter Evans, Toby Lehman, Mike Carrol, Tom and Donita Anderson, and Don and Patty Daufeldt,

Captains for the 2018 season were announced, They are Thurness and Martin.

Reynolds noted that this was the team's four consecutive winning record and "one of the better in West Liberty history."

They played a very difficult schedule including six state-qualifiers, and nearly half of the teams they played were ranked at one time this season.

"We have a chance at being a very good team again next year," Reynolds said.

Pitching: Emma Martin pitched in 25 games, starting 23. Her record was 12-9. She pitched 142 innings, giving up 78 earned runs. She waked 30 and struck out 59. Macy Akers pitched in 13 games, starting six. She had a 4-1 record. She pitched 55 1/3 innings giving up 45 earned rund. She walked 21 and struck out 26. Janey Gingerich pitched in 10 games, starting seven. Her record was 4-4. She pitched 30 innings, giivng up 28 earned runs. She walked 20 and struck out 21. Isabel Morrison pitched in one game. She pitched one inning.
