WL whomps Wildcats

The Comets’ baseball team 10-runned the visiting Columbus Wildcats 14-4 in four-and-a-half innings June 27, 14-4.

"It was good," West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said. "We got a couple of guys an at-bat who hadn't had an at-bat. It's kind of that time of year where we start playing better baseball. We played pretty clean defensively. Joe (Baker) threw well. Brayton (Rock) hadn't played for a couple weeks - he's been injured, So it was a good opportunity to get him out there and knock the rust off a little bit."

In the top of the first, The first Columbus batter grounded out to third baseman Seth Feldman. He throw to first baseman Justis Dengler for the out.

The next batter popped out to catcher Jackson Gingerich. The next batter worked the count full then walked. A fly out ot shortstop A.J. Lenz ended the half-inning with no score.

The Comets scored two runs in the bottom of the first. The first batter flied out to center field. Michael Hartman drew a four-pitch base on balls.

J. Dengler reached on an error on the center fielder and took second base. Hartman scored on the error. Noah Feldman doubled, and J. Dengler scored. Baker drew a four-pitch base on balls. The next two batters flied out. West Liberty had a 2-0 lead.

There was no score in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats got a one-out single but the runner was out on a fielder's choice. S. Feldman fielded the ball and threw to second baseman Will Esmoil for the out.

The next batter grounded out to S. Feldman at third base who threw to J. Dengler for the third out of the half-inning.

West Liberty scored three more runs in the bottom of the second. Talen Dengler singled, then Esmoil bunted and reached safely. The next batter flied out to left field. T. Dengler and Esmoil advanced to third and second on a passed ball.

T. Dengler and Esmoil scored. Hartman got a bunt single and stole second base with J. Dengler at bat. J. Dengler singled, and Hartman scored. N. Feldman singled to put runners at first and second.

With Baker at bat, J. Dengler and N. Feldman advanced to third and second on a passed ball. Baker was hit by a pitch, and the bases were loaded with Comets. The next batter was out on the infield fly rule. A line out to the shortstop ended the inning. West Liberty had a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Columbus scored a run. A one-pout line drive single, a stolen base, a fly out, and another single, put two runners on with two outs. A run scored on an error. A runner was caught stealing to end the half-inning.

The Comets scored five runs in the bottom of the third. T. Dengler drew a four-pitch base on balls. Esmoil hit into a fielder's choice, and T. Dengler was out at second base.

Lenz singled to put runners at first and second. With Hartman at bat, Esmoil stole third base and scored on an error by the Columbus catcher. Lenz advanced to third on the error. Hartman singled, and Lenz scored.

With J. Dengler at bat, Hartman stole second base. J. Dengler singled, and Hartman scored. With N. Feldman at bat, J. Dengler advanced to second base on a passed ball. J. Dengler stole third base and scored on a fly out to left field.

Baker singled, and advanced to second base on a wild pitch with Gingerich at bat. Gingerich doubled, and Baker scored. A fly out to center field ended the third inning, but the Comets held a 10-1 lead.

Columbus scored a run in the top of the fourth. The first batter doubled. The next batter grounded out to Esmoil. The runner advanced to third on the throw to first.

The runner scored on a wild pitch, and the batter singled. Baker got a strikeout, looking, to end the half-inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, West Liberty scored four more runs. T. Dengler singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Esmoil reached on ann error in the right fielder. Lenz was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Hartman singled, and T. Dengler scored. The next batter flied out to center field. N. Feldman singled, scoring Esmoil and Lenz.

There were Comets on the corners. Baker singled, scoring Hartman. N. Feldman and Baker advanced to third and second on a wild pitch. The batter struck out. Race Oepping drew a five-pitch base on balls. A pop out to second base ended the inning.

The Comets had a 14-2 lead, and the Wildcats needed to score at least three runs to keep the game going. They scored two in the top of the fifth.

The first batter singled and stole second. A double scored the runner. A single put runners at the corners. The next batter flied out to center fielder Michael Hartman. A walk loaded the bases.

The next batter reached on a fielder's choice, and the Comets got a force out at third. A run scored. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice, and a force out at second base ended the game with a 14-4 score.

"Our guys are a pretty resilient team," Columbus Head Coach Jake McCullough said. "Our guys battle all the way through the game. It doesn't matter if we're up 20 runs or down 20 runs.

The Comets split a double header against Wilton. In one game, the Beavers and Comets were tied until the top of the seventh, when Wilton scored 11 runs. The other game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when the Comets scored for the win.
