Softball splits with Wilton

The West Liberty softball team split a double header with Wilton at West Liberty June 29. The Comets won one game 6-4 in seven innings and lost the other 2-1 in an extra inning.

In their win, was the pitcher of record. The first two batters singled. Akers got a strikeout. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice. Akers threw to third baseman Janey Gingerich for the force out. A line out to second baseman Haddie Anderson ended the half-inning.

The Comets scored a run in the bottom of the first. Haylee Lehman singled to lead off. She stole second base and took third on a groundout. Anderson grounded out allowing Lehman to score. A strikeout ended the inning.

There was no scored in the second. The first Wilton batter grounded out to Akers. The next batter struck out looking. A walk was followed by a groundout to Lehman at shortstop.

In the Comet half of the second inning, three groundouts took a care of the Comets.

Wilton scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Breana Thurness made an unassisted out at first base for the first out. A single up the middle and a single to right field put runners at the corners. A home run scored three runs. A strikeout and a groundout to Lehman at shortstop ended the half-inning.

The Comets took back those three runs in the bottom of the inning. Brooklyn Harned drew a one-out base on balls. Lehman singled to center field. Akers reached on an error, and Harned scored. A double by Anderson drove in Lehman and Akers. A fly out to left field and a line out to center field ended the inning. West Liberty had a 4-3 lead.

The fourth inning was scoreless. The first Wilton batter popped out to first baseman Thurness. The next batter was hit by a pitch. A pop out to Lehman and a groundout to Lehman ended the half-inning.

The first two West Liberty batters grounded out to third base. Janey Gingerich singled, Harned was hit by a pitch, but they were both left on base after a groundout ended the inning.

Wilton added a run to their tally in the top of the fifth. A single and an error put runners at the corners. Another single drove in a run.

A pop out to Akers at pitcher was the first out. A double play, groundout to Lehman who threw to Anderson at second for the first out. anderson threw to Thurness for the second out of the double-play and the third out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wilton brought in a new pitcher. Akers drew a base on balls. The next three batters were out on a line out, a strikeout, and a fly out.

The score was tied going into the sixth inning. The Beavers were retired in order in their half of the inning on a groundout to Akers, a pop out to Thurness, and another groundout to Akers.

In the top of the inning, the Comets scored the winning two runs. Skylar Wendt popped out to third base. Isabel Morrison doubled to left center field.

Averi Goodale ran for Morrison. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher. Harned walked, and Goodale took third base on a wild pitch. Lehman reached on an error, and two runs scored on the error with Harned and Goodale scoring. A groundout to the pitcher ended the inning.

The Beavers got a single to lead off the seventh. A groundout advanced the runner to second base. A pop out to the shortstop and a fly out to right field ended the game with a 6-4 West Liberty win.
