The West Liberty softball team played hard and beat not only North Cedar, but the approaching storm. The Comets beat the Knights 12-0 in three innings before a storm rolled in June 15.

"They say hitting is contagious, and I think it was tonight," West Liberty Head Coach Dave Reynolds said. "It wasn't the game I expected. Good team effort, ran the bases well. We threw the ball around pretty well once it was hit.

"They put some pressure on us, and we responded and got the outs. That's the sign of a good team."

The first North Cedar batter flied out to Janey Gingerich in right field. The next batter reached on an error, but a fielder's choice got the lead runner, and the runner was caught stealing for the third out.

The Comets scored six runs in the bottom of the first and batted the order around. The first batter lined out to the Knights pitcher. Macy Akers was hit by a pitch. Haddie Anderson hit a double, and Akers advanced to third and scored on an error.

Austyn Crees drew a base on balls to put runners at the corners. Crees took second base on defensive indifference. Breanna Thurness was walked to load the bases with Comets. Skylar Wendt singled on a liner to right center field, and Anderson scored. The bases were still loaded.

Gingerich walked, scoring Crees and keeping the bases loaded. Parker Werlng dingled, Thurness scored, and still the bases were full of Comets.

With Emma Martin at the plate, Wendt and Gingerich scored on two pitches and Werling advanced to third on those pitches. Martin popped out to the short stop for the second out. Werling was thrown out at home for the third out.

In the top of the second inning, the first batter grounded out to Anderson at second base who threw to Thurness at first base for the out.

The next batter doubled to center field. A single to center field put a runner at first and third. The next batter hit a grounder toward third base, where Akers fielded it.

She looked the runner back to third and threw the batter out at first. The runner at third tried for home again, and Thurness threw the ball to Crees at home for the third out.

West Liberty scored three more runs in the bottom of the second. Haylee Lahman led off with a single. With Akers at bat racking up balls, Lehman stole second and third. Akers walked.

With Anderson at bat, Lehman scored on an error by the North Cedar catcher. Anderson popped out for the first out of the inning. Akers stole second base. Crees reached on an error. Thurness tripled to right field, scoring Akers and Crees.

The next batter struck out, and the final batter flied out to right field to end the inning. The Comets led 9-0.

The Knights started the top of the third with two singles. The next batter popped out to Anderson at second. The runners advanced on a wild pitch.

The next batter hit into a fielder's choice, and Akers threw the ball home to get the lead runner. A groundout to Akers at third ended the half-inning.

Three more runs in the bottom of the third for the Comets ended the game. Werling and Martin both drew bases on balls.

The next batter popped out, but the runners advanced to second and third. Akers walked to load the bases. Anderson hit a double scoring Werling and Martin. Crees flied out to left field, and Akers scored ending the game with a 12-0 score.

"They got some good bats in the lineup, and they've got quite a bit of speed," North Cedar Head Coach Carrie Martin said. "We just didn't handle our business tonight. Sometimes that happens."
