Comets clean up Bears

Norv and Mary Coblentz · Wednesday, June 14, 2017
The West Liberty baseball team swept the visiting West Branch Bears in a double header June 12. scores were 6-1 and 10-3. It was the Comets' first double header sweep since 2012 in the Cedar Valley Conference.

"We showed a little toughness, a little resilience, something we haven't done (lately), West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said.

"We've been talking about it. Last week, we had an opportunity to beat Northeast but we just couldn't quite finish it. We talked about finishing the game and learning to win,” he said.

West Branch was up 4-1 in the final inning of game one, but the Comets came through in with a walk-off run in the final big inning to squeeze out a win 4-5.

In game two West Liberty jumped to an early 5-0 lead, but West Branch chiseled away until it took the lead 6-7 in the seventh inning. However, drives by Aj Lenz and Justice Dengler would bring in four runs, giving the Comets a 10-7 win.

"Hopefully, we're a step closer. We had to come back in both games, but it's good. They're throwing strikes,” said Coach Wulf. “Those guys did a good job tonight. Defensively, any mistakes we did make, we kind of covered up and prevented big innings. Getting out of that bases loaded jam only down one was huge."

Game Two

In the top of the first, West Branch's lead-off batter flied out to Michael Hartman in left center field. The next batter grounded out to the shortstop A.J. Lenz. The next batter doubled to center field but was caught stealing third base for the third out.

The Comets scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Hartman led off with a single to left field, beating the throw to first. Lenz drew a base on balls.

Justis Dengler singled to left field to load the bases. A fielder's choice kept the bases loaded with the force out at home. Joe Baker hit the ball to the shortstop and beat the throw to first.

Lenz scored. Spencer Daufeldt reached on an error, and Dengler and Noah Feldman scored. Jackson Gingerich was hit by a pitch to load the bases again.

The next batter bounced out to third base. With Esmoil at bat, Daufeldt scored on a passed ball. The inning ended with the Comets on top 5-0.

West Branch scored a run in the top of the second on a single, a welk, two fly outs, and another single.

In the Comet half of the second, Hartman got a lead-off walk. He stole second base and took third. The next batter flied out, Dengler walked, and N. Feldman walked to load the bases. Lenz scored while Baker was at bat. A lineout to the third baseman ended the inning.

The Bears scored two runs in the top of the third, and the Comets were retired in order in the bottom half. The Comets still had a 6-3 lead.

West Branch scored a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth. A Bears' run in the topo of the sixth made the score 7-6, Bears.

West Liberty scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-7 lead. The first batter grounded out. Brett Meyer drew a base on balls, and Esmoil also walked.

The Bears brought in a new pitcher, and he walked Hartman to load the bases. Lenz singled and scored Meyer. Dengler doubled, clearing the bases, and Esmoil, Hartman, and Lenz scored.

The Comets held the Bears scoreless in the top of the seventh. Two singles with two outs was followed by a fly out to left field to end the game with a 10-7 Comet win.

"I was really proud of the way we battled back because we had a really rough start there," West Branch Head Coach Rich Stout said. "Brett (Schiele) ate up a lot of innings and did a good job for us. It's only the second time he's thrown varsity for us.

"Our bats came through. What's still hurting us is walking too many. When you're playing this many young kids, you're going to make mistakes."
