Softball sweeps West Branch

The West Liberty softball team cleaned house with a sweep the West Branch Bears during a double header Monday, June 12. The took the first game 6-1 and the second 10-3 at West Liberty.

"We got ahead in both games early and kept the pressure all night long in both games," West Liberty Head Coach Dave Reynolds said. "We made them try to come from behind, and they didn't have it tonight to do it.”

In game one Austyn Crees was 3 for 4, driving in two runs with a double and a home run. Haylee Lehman was 2 for 3 while Emma Martin pitched seven innings for the win. She gave up one earned run on four hits.

In game two Haylee Lehman 3 for 4 while Macy Akers went an impressive 3-3, including an in-the-park home run. Her towering drive got her to third base while a throwing error gave her the opportunity to go all the way home.

Janey Gingerich pitched five innings and got the win for the Comets. She gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits. Emma Martin pitched two innings. She gave up one hit, striking out two.

“They're struggling a little bit, but we were struggling last week,” said Coach Reynolds. “We're happy to get back on the right track. We played great defense tonight with a couple of miscues.”

“I’m happy with where we are right now,” he added. “The younger kids are stepping up and becoming contributors, and that's what we need. We had fun tonight. It's always fun when we win.”

Game One

The Comets set the Bears down in order in the top of the first. In the Comet half of the inning, Haylee Lehman got a lead-off double to left center field. After a strikeout, a fly ball to center field by Haddie Anderson scored Lehman.

Crees hit a homerun over the right field fence for a 2-0 West Liberty lead. A strikeout ended the inning.

In the top of the second, Emma Martin struck out the first batter. The second batter lined out ot Anderson at second base. The third batter flied out to Lehman, who moved into left field from shortstop to make the catch.

Skylar Wendt got a lead-off single in the second and stole second base. But a strikeout, a bounce out to the pitcher, and a groundout ended the inning.

A single and a sacrifice got a West Branch runner to second in the top of the third. A pop out to Akers at third base and a groundout to Anderson at second ended the half-inning.

The Comets scored two more runs in the bottom of the third. Akers got a one-out walk, then a fly out in foul territory gave the Comets two outs. Crees doubled up the middle, and Akers scored from first base.

Breana Thurness singled to left center field, scoring Crees. Wendt reached on an error, but a groundout ended the inning.

In the top of the fourth, the first West Branch batter flied out to Janey Gingerich in left field. The next batter grounded out to Martin at pitcher. A ground out to Akers at third base ended the half-inning.

Brittney Harned got a one-out single to right center field, and Lahmen drew a base on balls. But a fly out to left field and a fielder's choice ended the inning with no additional score.

The Bears got a two-out single down the third base line in the top of the fifth, but a three-pitch strikeout by Martin ended their chance to score.

The Comets added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Crees doubled to left center field. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Thurness.

Wendt got a single to left field, and the next batter grounded out. Isabel Morrison singled to left field and took second to put runners at second and third with two outs. But a groundout ended the inning.

West Branch scored their run in the top of the sixth on a dingle, a bounce out to Martin, a groundout to Anderson at second, a hit batsman, and a single up the middle. A groundout to Lehman ended the inning.

Lehman scored another insurance run for the Comets in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single, a stolen base, another stolen base, and she took home on an overthrow to third. A strikeout, a line out, and a ground out ended the inning.

The Bears were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game. Martin struck out the first batter. The second batter grounded out to Lehman at shortstop, and the third batter popped out to Thurness at first bast.

"We're showing inconsistency," West Branch Head Coach Kevin Kaalberg said. "We're not adjusting throughout the game. We've just got to keep working. This group is going to play hard. We've got to play smarter, anticipate things a little bit better on defense. Offensively, we're not making any adjustments at all. Until you do, you're going to suffer."

The Bears suffered in the second game as well, but they did score three runs, one each in the second, third, and fourth innings. West Liberty scored two in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth, and one in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Comets dropped both games of a double header on the road. Haylee Lehman scored a run in the Comets 5-1 loss. In the 5-2 loss, Lahman, Macy Akers, and Haddie Anderson each hit a double. Anderson and Akers had the Comets' RBIs.

Haylee Lehman tripled and batted in a run in the Comets' loss to Cascade. Haddie Anderson was 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Skylar Wendt was 1-3 with an RBI.

The Comets broke a four-game losing streak with a win over the Rebels. Breana Thurness was 2-2, Haylee Lehman was 2-3, and Macy Akers was 2-4. Akers, Haddie Anderson, and Thurness each hit a double.

West Liberty 13, Waukon 1 June 10 at Anamosa tourney

The Comets made short work of Waukon, beating them handily in four and a half innings. Macy Akers hit two doubles and batted in three runs on 2-2 hitting. She walked twice and stole a base. Haddie Anderson and Skylar Wendt also hit a double each. Anderson was 2-2 at the plate with two walks and four RBIs. Wendt had two RBIs, and Haylee Lehman batted in three.
