West Liberty soccer comes to an end

Both boys’ and girls’ West Liberty varsity soccer teams ended their 2017 seasons early when they couldn’t find a way to make it through the sub-state tournament last week.

The boys came into the second game of post season play hoping to grab win number six of their current win streak and advance to play Assumption Davenport.

The Comets had shut down Wapello 10-0 in the first round of the tournament two days prior to the second round.

But on Wednesday, May 24, the boy’s team went into Danville and played a competitive game against the Bears but couldn’t get the “W” in a close 3-2 loss.

Both teams came into this game with wide win margins with Danville having an overall record of (14-2) and West Liberty at (13-4).

Three days later on May 27, Danville lost to Assumption, Davenport with a score of 4-0. That loss advanced Davenport Assumption into the state tournament that started on Thursday June 1.

Even though this season ended, the Comets will be looking forward to next season. The team had five seniors graduate, but will have eight juniors with a lot of experience to fill their shoes and lead the team.

On the girls’ side, the Comets were hoping to get their first win to advance to the second round of the sub-state tournament.

The Comets lost the previous week to Mt. Vernon in the final week of the regular season at home 5-2.

After having started the season at (1-3), the Comets went on a seven game win streak. They would then drop their last two games going into the tournament at (8-5).

In the first round, the Comets went into Iowa City Regina and left with a 6-2 loss, thus ending their season.

Regina went into the sub-state tournament at (3-9) after a win over Solon to close out the regular season. They moved on to the next round of the tournament to take on Solon who came into the second round at (8-4).

The girls’ team had seven senior girls graduate from the team. Next year there will be five junior girls moving up to take their places to lead the team back to the playoffs.
