The West Liberty baseball team lost to New London 7-5 in the season-opener at West Liberty May 23.

"We weren't perfect, but we kept them to 2-3 runs (no seven or eight run innings)," West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said. "They made us play on a couple errors. Then late, we walked a few guys. (Compared to a year ago), we swung the bats really well, and we gave ourselves a chance to win. I thought the kids played hard and did a good job."

The Tigers scored in the top of the first. The first batter drew a base on balls and stole second. On a groundout to second baseman Will Esmoil, the runner advanced to third base. The run scored on a passed ball.

The next batter grounded out to Noah Feldman at third base. A double to right center field was followed by a single. A courtesy runner was caught stealing third base to end the half-inning.

The Comets tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Michael Hartman singled to lead off. A.J. Lenz lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hartman to second base. Justis Dengler hit off the end of the bat and reached on an error by the Tigers short stop. Jackson Gingerich singled to center field, and Hartman scored. Dengler advanced on a passed ball, but two strikeouts ended the inning with a 1-1 score.

The Tigers were retired in order in the top of the second on a groundout to Esmoil at second, a groundout to Lenz at shortstop, and a strikeout by Dengler.

Cole Chown got a one-out single to center field and stole second base in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Hartman drew a four-pitch walk. A pop out ended the inning.

The Tigers reached on an error to start the third inning. A single to left field led to a force out at second, then a runner was caught stealing second base, Jackson Gingerich to Lenz, to end the half-inning.

Gingerich got a one-out single to center field in the bottom of the third. Feldman got an RBI double, scoring Gingerich. A fly out and a groundout ended the inning. The Comets had a brief 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Tigers tied the score. The first batter grounded out to Esmoil at second base. The next batter singled to center field and took second base on a groundout to second. A single and an error scored a run. Gingerich at catcher threw a runner out at third trying to steal to end the half-inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Comets were retired in order on a strikeout, a groundout to the pitcher, and a pop out to first base.

New London scored three runs in the top of the fifth. The first batter struck out with Lenz pitching. The next batter popped out to Lenz. A walk, an error, a wild pitch, a hit batsman, and a walk scored one run. A single down the third base line scored another run. A walk loaded the bases. A strikeout ended any further threat from New London.

Gingerich reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but a strikeout left him on base. After five innings, the score was 5-2, Tigers.

Hartman moved to the pitchers' mound and started the sixth with a strikeout. Two walks and a single to left center field loaded the bases. A walk scored a run.

The next batter flied out to Dengler in center field. The runners stayed where they were. Another walk scored another run. The next batter ended the half-inning with a groundout to Feldman at third base.

The Comets were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth on a groundout, a strikeout, and another groundout. Going into the final inning, the Tigers had a 7-2 lead.

The Comets held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the seventh. A walk, a strikeout and a stolen base put a runner in scoring position. But a groundout to Lenz and a batter picked off at third ended the threat.

The Comets needed five runs in the bottom of the seventh. They got three. Esmoil reached on an error, and Hartman got a bloop single to advance Esmoil.

A balk was called, and the Comets had runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored Esmoil. The next two batters struck out. Gingerich hit a single and scored Lenz. Feldman hit a single to left field.

Joe Baker walked to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Gingerich to score, but a strikeout ended the game before the Comets scored enough runs.

The final score was 7-5.

"We were a little rusty," New London Coach Brad Helmerson said. "We had some mistakes. I tell you (it's) a very improved West Liberty team from what we played last year. Hats off to them. They played tough and never gave up and made us make a lot of mistakes."
