The West Liberty softball team picked up their fifth win of the young season May 27 at the Louisa-Muscatine tourney at Letts. The Comets started the tourney with a loss to Muscatine, then defeated Van Buren before playing West Burlington.

“We'd like to have (started the season) 6-0, but I think we're 5-1 now,” West Liberty Head Coach Dave Reynolds said. “That's not so bad. I'm pretty pleased and pretty proud of these girls with how they've handled some clutch situations. It's hard to come back with a team like Muscatine. My hat's off to them.

“We should have scored more runs on them, but the kids were trying hard. This game, I knew it was going to happen. It was just a matter of time before we got the bats going. I love the way some of those younger kids clutched up.”

The Comets were the visitors on the scoreboard. Macy Akers doubled with one out to left center field. Austin Crees singled, and there were Comets on the corners. A strikeout and a line out to center field ended the half-inning.

West Burlington was retired in order in the bottom of the first. The first two batters grounded out to Haylee Lehman at shortstop who threw to Breana Thurness at first for the outs. The next batter flied out to Skylar Wendt in center field to end the inning.

Parker Werling got a two-out base on balls in the top of the fourth. The next batter grounded out.

In the bottom of the fourth, Akers struck out the first batter. The next batter walked, stole second, and went to third on a groundout to Thurman. The next batter grounded out to Thurman to end the threat.

“It was a pitchers' dual for a little bit, then the bats for both teams woke up,” West Burlington Head Coach David Oleson said. “They just had the bats going at the right (time).
