Girls’ track season comes to an end

The West Liberty girls' track and field season came to an end at the state-qualifying meet at Mount Pleasant May 11.

"No excuses," West Liberty Co-head Coach Dennis Riley said. "The girls gave a good effort, but it wasn't enough to qualify for state.

"We lose five seniors but will return a good nucleus of girls to make the 2018 season one to look forward to."

Yadisha Mendez finished the 100m dash in 14.29, and Maddie Law finished in 81.33.

In the 200m dash, Nixsia Melchor finished in 30.06, and Mendez had a time of 31.01.

Emilie Burke placed third in the 400m dash with a time of 63.77. Ahtziri Aragon had a time of 81.33.

McKenzie Cole ran the 800m run in 3:18.47, and Skylar Wendt finished with a time of 3:33.03.

In the distance races, Jimena Fierro finished the 3000m run in 11:58.09 for sixth place. Fierro finished the 1500m run in 5:36.51, and Nealy Martin-Thomas finished in 6:37.80.

The 4x100 team of Emma King (16.75), Jocelyn Baltazar (16.06), Aragon (17.65), and Law (15.30) finished in eighth place with a combined time of 15.30.

The 4x200 team was also in eighth place. Their combined time was 2:00.77. Team members were Melchor (30.22), Jaida Dalton (29.52), Belinda Heckman (28.81), and Mendez (31.67).

The 4x400 team of Dalton (68.81), Heckman (68.57), Burke (65.39), and Elizabeth Baca (74.29) placed sixth with a combined time of 4:37.37.

The sprint medley team of Dalton (14.32), Melchor (14.18), Burke (28.46), and Heckman (66.02) placed sixth with a combined time of 2:03.49.

In the 4x800, Martin-Thomas (3:02.39), Baca (3:05.61), Wendt (3:32.70), and Cole (3:21.82) placed sixth with a combined time of 13:02.83.

The distance medley team of Mendez (29.93), Melchor (29.51), Fierro (72.37), and Baca (2:57.84) placed seventh in 5:10.44.

The Comets double scored in the discus. Ella Filerio was third with a throw of 106-08. Morgan Nichols was fifth with a throw of 99-01.5.

Miranda McHugh put the shot 29-04.75 for seventh place. Abby Jacques put the shot 22-08.5.
