Girls’ track competes in Anamosa

The West Liberty girls competed in the Anamosa meet April 25, managing to fit in a meet in a cold, wet week.

"Even though the Lady Comets finished last in this meet, they competed well and turned in at least 12 personal records,: West Liberty Head Coach Dennis Riley said. "A few of the girls really stepped it up and found themselves in a tough meet."

Jimena Fierro scored in both the 1500m run and the 300m run. She placed seventh in the 1500 with a time of 5:33.54. In the 3000, she finished in 12:08.99 for third place. Nealy Martin-Thomas finished the 1500 in 6:28.28.

The Comets double-scored in the discus. Morgan Nichols had a throw of 103-11.50 for third place, and Ella Filerio had a throw of 100-10.25 for fourth place. Katie Schneider had a throw of 96-08.50.

"Miranda McHugh continued to flourish in the shot with a heave of 30-01, and Abby Jacques threw a season-best 22-06," Riley said.

"Elizabeth Baca, Naely Martin-Thomas, and Jimena Fierro all posted season-bests in the 800s and long distances, respectively. Katie Schneider ran some nice races and all of the sprinters did a nice job."

Maddie Law ran a 16.94 in the 100m dash, and Jocelyn Baltazar finished in 18.15. In the 400m dash, Elizabeth Baca finished in 1:13.86, and McKenzie Cole finished in 1:23.62.

In the 800m run, Baca had a time of 3:03.63.

In the 4x100, Nixsia Melchor, Schneider, Alexis Partida, and Yadisha Mendez finished in 56.25.

IN the 4x200, Jaida Dalton, Mendez, Melchor, and Emilie Burke run the race in 2:01.03.

The 4x800 team of Martin-Thomas, Baca, Skylar Wendt, and Ahtziri Aragon finished with a time of 12:53.45.

The sprint medley team of Dalton, Mendez, Belinda Heckman, and Emilie Burke finished with a time of 2:04.66.

The distance medley team of Melchor, Partida, Schneider, and Heckman had a time of 5:08.04.

"Coach Mike Hart and I were very pleased with the more aggressive attitude with the girls, and up and down the lineup, there was a tremendous effort," Riley said. "We will finish the season as hard as we can, and our best effort will always be given."
