Girls’ track gears up at Wapello

The West Liberty girls' track and field team scored 49 points at the Wapello meet March 28.

"The girls had some good times and took home a first-place finish in the 4x200," Co-Head Coach Mike Czarnecki said.

The 4x200 team of Jaida Dalton, Alexis Partida, Emilie Burke, and Reghan McNaul won their event with a time of 1:59.

In the sprint medley relay race, Belinda Heckman, Yadisha Mendez, McNaul, and Burke finished in 2:05.82 for third place.

The 4x400 team of McNaul, Kate Schneider, Nealy Martin-Thomas, and Burke finished in 4:56.02 for fourth place.

The distance medley team of McKenzie Cole, Elizabeth Baca, Ahtziri Aragon, and Martin-Thomas were sixth with a time of 5:57.46.

The 4x100 team was also sixth. Members were Baca, Emma King, Cole, and Aragon. They finished the race in 1:08.87.

In the distance races, Jimena Fierro was third in both the 1500m run and the 3000m run. She finished the 1500 in 6:05.93 and the 3000m in 12:41.83. "(Fierro) ran very well in her first-ever 3000m run," Czarnecki said.

The Comets did well in the throwing events as well. Ella Filerio was second in the discus with a throw of 88-10. Morgan Nichols got third with a throw of 88-06. Schneider was fourth with a throw of 88-00.Miranda McHugh had a throw of 66-11.

In the shot put event, Filerio was sixth, putting the shot 27-11.50. Nichols put the shot 27-11, McHugh put the shot 27-08.25, and Abby Jacques put the shot 20-07.50.

Burke was the Comets' top finisher in the dashes. She was fifth in the 200m dash with a time o 30.09. Mendez finished in 30.09. Mendez ran the 100m dash in 14.93. King ran the 400m dash in 1:40.95.
