Leona Marie Dewar died Feb. 18, 2017 in Phoenix, Ariz. Born May 2, 1922 to Marie and Herman Rhode in her parents’ home in West Liberty, Iowa. A graduate of the Class of 1940 from West Liberty High School. She married Robert L. Dewar in 1944, and had two children, Robert and Donna.
Leona and Bob lived for a while in Illinois before coming back to West Liberty to care for aging parents. While here, they owned and operated a plumbing shop. In 1978, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz.
Leona enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, talking about the old days, and talking on the phone. She kept in close contact with girlfriends she made in school.
Her family was her top priority and she was always willing to help anyone in need. She was also very strong in her faith. Even living far from West Liberty, she had a strong connection with and was so proud to be from Iowa.
Leona was preceded in death by husband Robert and her parents. She is survived by children Robert (March) Dewar of West Liberty and Donna (Richard) Jambey of Glendale, Arizona. She is also survived by four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Per her wishes, her body was donated to medical science.
