Comets out in first round

The West Liberty boys' basket all team had a late night contest at Davenport Assumption Feb. 20 for the first round of the Class 3A District 7 tournament.

The Comets fell 69-26. It wasn't the way any team wants to end their season, but the Comets pried the lid off the basket in the second half. The Comets fell behind early and stayed there.

Assumption is a private school that plays a strong mostly 4A schedule, and it showed.

"The first half there was a lid," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "We couldn't buy a bucket. I thought there were some good shots, but we couldn't buy a bucket. It's too bad. (Davenport Assumption is) a good team, and they showed it. It would have been nice to make a few of those buckets to make us feel a little bit better about where we're at offensively.

"The guys didn't quit at halftime. They came out, and they still played. I'm proud of them for that. We practiced (but) we couldn't simulate (Assumption's) speed and quickness. Hopefully the younger (players) are aware now they need to pick it up."

The Comets scored one point in the first quarter on a free throw by Spencer Daufeldt at the 32.4 second mark.

Other highlights for the Comets in the first quarter included a jump ball forced by Daufeldt. The score after the first quarter was 24-1

The second quarter wasn't much better for West Liberty. West Liberty missed two free throws at the 6:01 mark.

A jump ball was forced by Noah Feldman who went to the floor for it. Gavin Chown got a defensive rebound.

Nathan Schemmel got a defensive rebound, and Noah Feldman made the Comets' first basket of the game at about the 1:50 mark for a 38-3 score. Halftime score was 43-3.

With the Comets down more than 35 points to start the second half, the clock ran continuously the entire second half. Each team scored 14 points in the third quarter.

It was the Knights' ball to start the second half. Schemmel got a defensive rebound, and N. Feldman made a basket at the 7:24 mark for a 45-5 score.

N. Feldman got a defensive rebound but the Knights got a steal. A basket by N. Feldman at the five minute mark made the score 45-7.

Seth Feldman made a three-point basket with 4:08 on the clock to make it 45-10. The next score by the Comets was a basket by N. Feldman for a 53-12 tally.

N. Feldman made another basket with less than a minute to go for a 55-14 score. N. Feldman banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 57-17 score going into the final quarter.

With the clock still running continuously, the fourth quarter went quickly. N. Feldman got a putback basket to start the quarter, and he got a three-point basket for a 60-22 score.

After a foul by the Knights, S. Feldman inbounded the ball to N. Feldman, and N. Feldman made a basket for a 63-24 score.

In the last few minutes of the game, Colton Kaalberg saved the ball from going out of bounds in to N. Feldman. S. Feldman and Kaalberg each got another defensive rebound. The final basket of the game was by N. Feldman with about 30 seconds left for a final score of 69-26.

"We talked about this game being more about us, being really sharp and taking care of business," Assumption Head Coach Matt Fitzpatrick said. "I thought we came out and we were really sharp. What I really liked about us tonight is we made extra passes, and we were really unselfish. We were sharp tonight. (Noah Feldman) is a really good player. He got a little loose in that second half. I thought we did a good job keeping him under control in the first half."
