The West Liberty boys' basketball team broke a five-game losing streak with a 56-40 home win against the Wilton Beavers Feb. 7.

This was the Comets' second win over Wilton this season. Jan. 3, the Comets beat the Beavers 52-51. The Comets' first-round post-season game is at Davenport Assumption Feb. 20 at approximately 8 p.m.

"It was a nice win," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "I thought we played better this time than we did over at Wilton. We made a defensive switch which helped quite a bit, put some more pressure on them."

First Half

The Comets controlled the opening tip, and Spencer Daufeldt scored the first points of the game for a 2-0 West Liberty lead.

The Beavers scored to tie it up. The Beavers got a defensive rebound and made a three-point basket to take a 5-2 lead. Seth Feldman made the first of four three-point baskets in the game to tie the score at 5-5 with 5:30 left in the quarter.

Noah Feldman got a defensive rebound, and a basket by S. Feldman gave the Comets a 7-5 lead. S. Feldman got a steal and a layup for a 9-6 score.

The Beavers were fouled on a shot and missed both free throws. N. Feldman made a basket at the 3:10 mark for an 11-5 score.

N. Feldman got a defensive rebound, but the Beavers got a steal and a basket. After a West Liberty deflection, the Beavers got a steal and layup with 1:15 on the clock.

Wilton was fouled with 16 seconds left in the quarter, but they missed both free throws. The score after a quarter's play was 11-9, Comets.

N. Feldman made a basket to start the second quarter scoring. Wilton completed a three-point play for a 13-12 West Liberty lead.

The Comets turned the ball over, then Leo Lopez grabbed a defensive rebound. N. Feldman made a basket at the 5:25 mark for a 15-12 West Liberty lead.

The next basket came at the 3:05 mark when S. Feldman made a three-point basket for an 18-12 score. Wilton scored, then Daufeldt made a basket.

Wilton was fouled and made both free throws for a 20-16 score with 2:22 left in the first half. Each team had a turnover, then N. Feldman got a putback basket. With less than a minute to go, Wilton was fouled and made both free throws for a 24-18 score at halftime.

Second Half

The first score of the third quarter was on two free throws by the Beavers at the 6:16 mark. S. Feldman made another three-point basket for a 27-20 score.

The Comets got a steal, and S. Feldman was fouled on a layup try. He made both free throws, and the score was 29-20.

A jump ball went to the Comets, and Daufeldt completed a traditional three-point play for a 32-20 score. After a Beavers time out, Wilton scored.

Both teams turned the ball over multiple times, then Wilton scored with less than two minutes left in the quarter for a 32-24 score.

S. Feldman made a three-point basket with 1:10 on the clock. The Beavers got a putback basket. With two seconds left on the clock, Daufeldt made a basket. The score going into the fourth quarter was 37-26, Comets.

Wilton had possession to start the fourth quarter. Nathan Schemmel got a defensive rebound, and N. Feldman made a basket.

Wilton was fouled and made the first of two free throws. N. Feldman got the rebound. Wilton got a defensive board, then the Beavers made a basket.

A three-point basket by Elias Rocha gave the Comets a 42-29 lead with 6:05 left in the game. Wilton made a three-pointer then got a rebound. N. Feldman got a steal and a layup for a 44-32 score.

After a Wilton foul, N. Feldman got another putback basket for a 46-32 score. Wilton was fouled and made one of two free throws. N. Feldman was fouled and made one of two free throws.

S. Feldman got a steal and a layup, and the score was 49-33. S. Feldman was fouled and made one of two free throws.

N. Feldman made back-to-back baskets, one of them a dunk, and the Comets had a 54-33 lead. Wilton made a basket, then N. Feldman was fouled and made both free throws for a 56-35 score.

In the final seconds, Wilton made one basket and three of three free throws for a final score of 56-40.

"The things we've struggled with all year, we struggled with tonight," Wilton Head Coach Mark Patterson said. "With 19 turnovers, you're going ot have a hard time beating anybody."

The Comets also defeated North Cedar on the road Feb. 9 to get their first two-game winning streak of the season. West Liberty finished their regular season with a 7-14 record.

West Liberty 58, North Cedar 57 Feb. 9 at West Liberty

The Comets finished their regular season with a thrilling one-point win over the visiting Knights of North Cedar. Senior Noah Feldman had a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Spencer Daufeldt scored 17 points and had nine rebound. Seth Feldman scored 11 points, including three-three-pointers. He also led in assists with three.
