Regals roll over Comets

The West Liberty boys' basketball team fell to the Regina Regals at Iowa City Jan. 24, 64-42. The Comets beat the Regals Dec. 9, 52-41.

First Half

Noah Feldman's opening tip went to Spencer Daufeldt, but the Comets turned the ball over, and Regina scored the first points of the game.

Nathan Schemmel scored the Comets' first points on a basket, assist Daufeldt. N. Feldman got a steal and a layup for a 4-2 West Liberty lead with 5:45 left in the first quarter. Regina scored back-to-back baskets, one a three-pointer, to take a 7-4 lead.

Daufeldt scored, assist Tanner Iske. Regina increased their lead to 13-6, and the Comets called a time out. N. Feldman drove to the basket and scored. Regina scored, N. Feldman got a putback basket.

N. Feldman got a defensive rebound and basket for a 15-12 Regina lead. A three-pointer by Regina put the Regals up 18-12 going into the second quarter.

Regina started the second quarter with a three-pointer for a 21-12 led. Regina got a defensive rebound, then Leo Lopez got a steal and layup.

Regina traveled, and Lopez made a three-point basket for a 21-17 score. Regina scored two quick baskets, one of them a three-pointer, for a 26-17 score with less than five minutes left in the first half.

Regina was fouled on a shot and missed both free throws. The Regals got a steal, then Iske saved the ball from going out of bounds to N. Feldman. N. Feldman was fouled on a shot and made the second of two free throws for a 27-18 score.

Regina completed a traditional three-point play. N. Feldman got a block, and the ball went to Seth Feldman. Daufeldt was fouled on a shot, Regina's seventh team foul of the half.

Daufeldt made the first free throw but missed the second. N. Feldman got the rebound and made a basket for a 30-21 halftime score.

Second Half

The teams played evenly in the third quarter. The Regals fouled the Comets on a shot, but West Liberty missed both free throws.

Regina completed a three-point play to take a 33-21 lead. S. Feldman made a three-point basket. Regina made another trey, then N. Feldman scored, assist Daufeldt, for a 36-26 score.

After a Regina foul, Iske made a three-point shot, assist N. Feldman. Regina scored, N. Feldman drew a foul and made both free throws, and the score was 38-31.

Regina made the next three baskets, one of them a three-pointer, and the Comets trailed 45-31. S. Feldman made another three-pointer.

Lopez got a defensive rebound, and N.Feldman scored for a 45-36 score at the end of the third quarter.

Regina had the ball and got a basket to start the final quarter. The Regals got a defensive rebound and made a basket.

The Comets fouled, and Regina missed the free throw. Regina made another basket, got a defensive board, and drew another foul.

Both free throws were missed. N. Feldman drove to the hoop and scored for a 51-38 score. Regina made a three-point play and another basket, then S. Feldman drove the baseline and scored.

Another two Regina baskets made it 60-40. N. Feldman scored in the paint. In the final 2:21, Regina made two of four free throws and a layup for a final score of 64-42.

Michael Aragon-Jacques had two defensive rebounds, and Colton Kaalberg had one rebound in the final minute of the game.
