The West Liberty boys' basketball team played a solid game in all aspects and beat the Durant Wildcats at West Liberty Jan. 17, 72-45.

"It was a nice win," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "We've been close the last couple of nights. We played well Friday night (at Tipton), didn't play so well Saturday (against Monticello). We played okay last night (at Letts). I was a little worried about four games in five days. I thought we did an excellent job playing with a lot of energy in the first half (tonight). Shot the ball really well. Our defense was solid tonight, too. I thought our bench was huge tonight. That's one of our best basketball games this year."

Noah Feldman had an excellent night. He scored 33 points and had 13 rebounds.

"I thought we had kids that could match up with (Noah Feldman), and we didn't," Durant Head Coach Matt Staube said. "We did a better job the first game (in December, a 64-42 Durant win). We just couldn't keep in front of Noah. He played a great game. We wanted to limit him and Seth (Feldman) and we didn't do a good job."

West Liberty took charge early. Spencer Daufeldt was fouled on a shot right away. He made one of two free throws for a 1-0 West Liberty lead.

Tanner Iske made a layup for a 3-0 lead, then a basket by N. Feldman at the 6:07 mark made the score 5-0. The Wildcats scored their first basket of the game at the 5:49 mark to make the score 5-2.

N. Feldman scored, Daufeldt made two free throws, then N. Feldman scored again for an 11-2 score. Durant made a basket, N. Feldman got a putback basket, and Durant scored.

Durant had possession to start the second quarter. The Comets missed two free throws, then Durant scored. A basket by Nathan Schemmel made it 24-12.

Brent Meyers completed a traditional three-point play, then Leo Lopez made a three-point basket for a 30-12 score with five minutes left in the first half.

Schemmel made a basket, N. Feldman made a basket, then Schemmel drew a foul and made one of two free throws.

Durant was fouled and made one of two free throws for a score of 35-13. Durant got a steal and a layup, then Meyers made a three-point basket.

The Wildcats scored, N. Feldman got a putback basket, then Durant scored again. With 50 seconds on the clock, N. Feldman scored. Durant made a three-point basket for a 42-22 halftime score.

The Comets outscored the Wildcats 19-6 in the third quarter. Daufeldt made two baskets in the quarter, Iske made two baskets, one a three-pointer, and N. Feldman scored the rest of the Comets' 19 third-quarter points. The score after three quarters of play was 61-28.

The Wildcats had the scoring edge in the final quarter, but it was too little, too late. The Comets scored first when S. Feldman inbounded the ball to N. Feldman, and N. Feldman made a basket.

Daufeldt scored, then S. Feldman made a three-point basket. Durant answered with a trey then got a steal and a layup for a 68-35 score. A basket by N. Feldman at the 4:40 mark made the score 70-35, and the continuous clock rule was in effect.
